    Low Framerate - Help!

Hey Cilraaz I am hoping for some help here.

    My computer(old workstation) stats:
    3.5GB of ram
    3.0Ghz Xeon
    3.0Ghz Xeon
    Gefore 7900 GTX 512mb card
    Cablevision internet
    XP 32bit
    Wow runs like crap.

I get good fps when alone questing/in exodar(over 100fps), and even in 5mans. The FPS is decent in 10mans and dala(35-40fps), with some lag(15fps). In 25mans I drop to 3fps. It is weird tho, I will have 3fps for most of the raid, with 1-3 seconds of 60fps, then right back down to 3fps.

I used this computer for raiding in 25mans in TBC with no issues. I play other online games with better graphics with no issues.

I can not figure out what the issue is and its really bugging me. I did all the things in this thread, it helped a little but I am still having the issue. Last thing I did was uncheck the combat log checkboxes, I havent been to a 25man since then but everything else remains unchanged.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This quote makes me think it's a CPU hang up. WotLK is a lot more CPU intensive than TBC and more than most other online games. (Which ones are you talking about, out of curiosity?)

Are you using dual Xeon CPUs? Or are you talking about a single dual-core Xeon CPU? In either case, Xeon isn't really known for its gaming performance.

Would you mind linking your dxdiag information? If you need help generating that, you can find the instructions here. Please also include the other requested information in that thread (resolution and WoW settings... you might also want to check your CPU/GPU temps).

    Re: Low Framerate - Help!

Dual Xeon CPUs. Mostlys L4D2 and other first person shooters, but nothing that I have played comes to mind as having problems like wow. (Except Aion but that is only 5mans or 400mans...and they have server issues im told).

    Wow Settings: 1280x1024

Thats what they are usually around, however I have had them all set lower with the same results(as well as higher). Usually I turn down particle density in 25 raids. Projected textures has no effect that I have been able to notice.

Power supply: Dell 450W over 3 12V rails.

Ram: I am not really sure of the speed or model, but its DDR2.

Would upgrading one of the processors to a 3.6Ghz Xeon solve the problem significantly? Unless the problem is elsewhere, that would be my only real solution short of buying a new computer.

I can't say I'm familiar enough with the Xeon chips to really make an accurate assessment. Perhaps someone else would know better.

I have a question about this statement:

"This quote makes me think it's a CPU hang up. WotLK is a lot more CPU intensive than TBC and more than most other online games."

When did WotLK start to become more CPU intensive? Was it at release or was it after the uldar patch? I just remembered when I saw an old video that I had; I healed sarth+3d 25man before uldar, my lag couldnt have been that bad during that.

Ancient is the word I would use. 99% certainly the bottleneck here.

And yes, Blizzard did changes in graphics engine somewhere along the 3.1 - 3.1.2 - 3.1.3 patches which made the game run significantly slower on old hardware.

Ancient, yes, but it should still be capable of half decent (at least out of the single digits) framerate at low settings.

    Re: Low Framerate - Help!

Yea it is decently old, I would say 1-2 years. I had a ~6600 256mb I bought years back that I paid $500 for, which broke. BFG then sent me this card to replace it.

While old, I haven't had any problems with it. I know it is not cutting edge, but neither is wow graphics. I have had all the settings graphical settings turned up with no real fps drop(not be low 50-60) in questing, and 5mans.

Really the problem is other people. Dala, raids, anywhere where I am around many other PCs. However I have been out of the PC hardware loop for a good time now, if this is a graphics bottleneck I will believe that within reason. I am not looking for 100+fps, if I can get 35 ideally, or hell 25fps in a 25man raid I am happy. I already manage higher than that in 10mans.

Would upgrading from this video card to something currently around ~$100 be a upgrade?

    Re: Low Framerate - Help!

Well I think I might have fixed one of the problems. After reading another thread I saw that overheating might be casuing my random freeze/lag spikes as the CPU slows down to prevent damage. I have been having the poor 25man FPS for a long time now(uldar+), but the random lag spikes are new[i.e. spring is here ]

I was doing some light testing with the windows CPU monitor up, recently my computer has been freezing briefly, at which time the CPU usage would drop, then return to normal. This was everywhere(solo-->raid), and some days I would have it, and other not at all.

I am going to move my computer to let it get better ventilation.

As far as the terrible fps in 25mans goes. Thinking back I did plenty of the original WotLK 25mans without trouble(at least it was playable to me). I rerolled repeatedly when Uldar came out(no raiding/end game), and then afterwards these issues appeared around ToC's release when I started to do 25mans again.

Thanks for all the help so far. If anyone else has any ideas please just throw them out there so I can look into it.

Am I really this stupid. Could heat cause overall low FPS in 25mans raids?

At some point that I do not remember(maybe uldar maybe before), my computer was moved from the floor(where it is cooler) to the top of a desk, with the vents facing the wall...

Yes it could. Try moving it away from the wall.

Well, if your CPU usage is dropping down significantly during gameplay, then it could be because of heat. This isn't just because of poor airflow due to the location of your PC. That usually does not make a big enough difference to cause your CPU to downclock itself. It is most likely because of dust build up on your CPU HSF that is preventing it from blowing off excess heat and causing your CPU to overheat and downclock itself.

In theory, I guess. But I've never seen or heard overheat slowing down games. The usual symptoms are all kinds of weird graphical glitches like for example wrong colors in parts of the screen, dots or lines or whole triangles that shouldn't be there. And just plain freezing the whole computer into state where nothing is responsive besides power switch. If a freeze happens, you might have picture still on, or a blank screen. All these are also symptoms of memory problems (usually in graphics card, sometimes in main RAM), not just overheating issues.

It's totally normal that temperatures go up quite a lot between 3d games and windows desktop.

Graphics engine was changed in Ulduar patch, and after that 25 man raids run significantly slower in old hardware. I used to play with 7900GTX card during vanilla/tbc and 8600GT during early WLK with no problems, but ToC25 was just totally unplayable on same hardware and I had to do some serious upgrading for both gfx card and cpu.

Meh, I dont think the dust is that excesive I do dust it from time I time I will check it later...

"Graphics engine was changed in Ulduar patch, and after that 25 man raids run significantly slower in old hardware"

How the hell could they do this? Why would they possibly think this was a good idea considering their player base? What is "old hardware"? I got to be honest, I DO NOT see a major difference between what I have and "new hardware"; that is as far as things like GPU clock speed and memory, ram, cpu speed ect.

I mean is some current $100 video card really going to outperform the video card I have? Is there a way to seperate video card issue from CPU issue.

Most definitely. For around $100 you can get a high end graphics card from the last generation (ati 4800s or nvidia 9800s). Both of those are two generations ahead of what you currently have so there will be a performance difference. Now, the question is how viable are the two Xeon CPUs for gaming? Because if they are the bottleneck of your system, which they mostly are since they aren't meant for gaming, then upgrading your graphics card won't make much of a difference.

This is something I can't say straight out of the blue either, maybe google would know. Windows XP is not terribly well Xeon optimized since it's not a server OS, but judging by the performance issues neither is WoW terribly well optimized to any specific CPU architecture so there isn't probably much difference.

But that is pulled completely out of my arse, so somebody who has actual real-life experience gaming on Xeons would be helpful to confirm anything.

Modern CPUs will downclock to avoid hitting a thermal limit (unless, of course, that has been disabled in BIOS... but why?).

The big question is: What were the CPU temps during this downclocking? Also, if you alt-tab to your monitoring software (say, RealTemp or CoreTemp) and sit on that for too long, the OS no longer gives WoW full CPU usage, since it's now a background process. This alone can be enough for SpeedStep to kick in and lower the CPU multiplier.

What makes them better? Core speed?, memory speed? arc?

Xeons have been used for gaming, at least the newer ones. The older ones arent terrible, I mean they are server chips so they can hold their own. I mean these chips are 7 years old now, when they came out gaming was great on them. I cant afford a whole new computer right now*. A new Xeon 3.6Ghz chip is $86 bucks.

It just seems like bs to me that only wow has this problem and a 3Ghz(2.5 I could understand) cant handle it, but they are old.

*Just made a computer for someone I know for $350, and it runs wow better than me. Its not a new computer, an old leftover one with a few replacement parts. My current budget is only $100 until sometime in the summer.

Thoes programs dont support my processor, I did find one, fanspeed or something, that does. So I will get some numbers and get back to you guys. How can I use the program tho if I dont want it in the foreground? Just run laps of dala for awhile then tab to check?

    Is my chip "modern"?
