I got my ancient system back from my cousin a few days ago...

Anyways, since that rig has windows xp, I was hoping to digitize my camcorder videos. I have been looking forward to doing this for years. But the question is where to start and how? Which (free) program is best to use? I have used windows movie maker in the past, and all I got in return was a big headache because I was never able to get anything done. It would keep freezing up randomly or giving me random errors which would cause the recording to stop streaming to my PC.

The PC specs are something above the lines of (if I remember correctly... still have to set it up and fire it up):
AMD 64 FX-55
MSI K8N Neo-2
512mb of RAM
ATI x800XT AIW AGP
1 or 2 awfully small HDDs, I think they add up to ~100GB

So, I would obviously most likely have to add another hard drive in there but the most important thing I need help with is deciding which free program is best to use. I don't plan on doing any video editing or adding any fancy effects, maybe just adding titles.
