It's just a string of code.
They are playing on the supply and demand angle.
By placing a limit, it causes people to make rash decisions and purchase faster.

They probably just have to type in some number into their system.

Actually, even with a digital item there can be an "amount of stock" - but it refers to the number of pre-generated codes that can be distributed. This did happen with one of the other pets or items a while back, and it just took a while for the "stock" to be refilled - or a new batch of valid codes to be generated and recorded in the system.
