I'd probably say no.

However, a Polearm + Shield Prot setup might be interesting, and further set them apart from Warriors. Would really make them look more like unmounted Knights.

With Cata coming there won't be any issues with there being no weapons for them to tank with. However they would be fighting Druids and Hunters for them, and agility isn't currently a great stat for Paladins.

Of course, to make that work you'd need to redesign the entire class. Which won't happen. Not in this game. So ultimately I think the answer is 'nice idea but it isn't happening'.
