WoW Alpha Exploration - The Movie (Catalyzt)

    Greetings mmo-champion and its visitors!
I have recently produced and published a video that showcases interestingly different places on an old ALPHA client (from 2003) of the original World of Warcraft, and I thought some of you might be interested in it as well.
Some things were seriously different back then, and at least I found it very interesting to see how WoW have evolved since then.

    linky:

ps. I would love it if you would leave a comment on the movie at warcraftmovies.com if you have an account there. Thank you

    Movie Description:
A journey through time to a WoW once forgotten.
From before most people had even had a chance to play it.
Many areas, things and places were very different and this video aims to show you some of these.

All footage within is from a client released December 11'th in 2003, which is just before the official BETA of the original WoW was launched.

You'd be surprised how much was finished, but many things and intentions seemed to be very different from how they turned out in the end.

    Places explored (random order):

    Winterspring - Unfinished
    Ironforge - completely different layout
    Caer Darrow (scholomance) - Wierd
AQ entrance - As if not an instance
    Stratholme - Interesting end.
Gillijim's Isle - Forgotten and vanished Island
Island of Dr. Lapidis - Also gone
    Karazhan - Very different design.
    Gadgetzhan - Smaller, BB buildings
Darnasus - How do you get off?
    Zul'Gurub - Unfinished
Old dark portal - Portal different
    Ogrimmar - Strange pathways.
    Mt. Hyjal - Beginning different

I tried to make the places shown in the video get progressively more interesting, but I am not quite sure if I succeeded in this. So hang on if you think it might be a bit slow in the beginning

This Movie is a relaxed tour through a WoW that once was.
So sit back, and enjoy the ride.

    Heh.
Someone linked me this movie earlier.

Some of the places really were fubar! Especially Karazhan, the layout looked nothing like it does today.
Also, whatever happened to those island in the south seas west of STV? Why were they scrapped? ???

I'll have to watch most of it when I get home because watching a naked female NE run around on my work computer probably isn't the best idea >.> But from what I saw, it looks very cool. Thanks for sharing!

The thing that baffles me abit is that AQ seemed already finished and textured back then.

Yep, it is - I wanted to create a feel of "adventure" and that theme fit perfectly.
However, only the first theme is from Alice in Wonderland

very cool! makes me appreciate the efforts blizzard put forth. I like the old version of IF better though. It reminds me of LOTR's Moria.

    Gilligan's Island.

That could be a reason why Gillijim's Island never made it in to release.

Awesome video and music, xcept for the Avatar song which saddened and distracted me

It just amases me how much ahead did the developers think back then! I mean look: Ahn Qiraj, Naxxramas, even Kharazan were partially done, more than 2 years before being released.

Re: WoW Alpha Exploration - The Movie (Catalyzt)

I admit I expected the Lich King to be stadning where Scholo would be XD

Interesting, though--ZG and AQ are instanced so the emptiness didn't surprise me. Straholme did surprise me, though. That unfinished tower...the area looks like the place where the Scarlet Bastion now is. The Necropolis has me wondering if Blizzard had been planning to introduce us to the Death Knights of today way back then. Just look at how it's positioned compared to Acherus.

Some of the textures from those two islands in STV were actually moved to the mainland. You can see that just by looking. IF looks like a maze and IMO, putting the Flightmaster within the city's gates makes alot of sense. You can tell Darnassus had been done when they were still deciding weather or not the Nelves would be a playable race or not.

As I suspected, Karazhan was supposed to have been included in vanilla. It just wasn't ready so it was released with TBC.

...Ok, time to change the ol' Sig ^_^
