It's used in alot of the most basic 450-475 weapons and armor so your assumptions are wrong.

NYFG's assumption may not be so wrong actually. Obsidian IS a type of rock, and it's formed inside cooling magma/lava.

And I don't see why it being used in many early recipes means it can't be a stone. In the earlier levels of mining I nearly drowned in them blasted stones.

Obsidian seems to be able to be formed into Cut Obsidian by both Blacksmiths AND Miners.
