Virus killed IE/GC but not wow/skype/ect

I got a virus today, I misclicked an add and got a fake windows virus scan bs. the "task manager is infected", "my computer is infected", ect ect.

Well I was able to kill it and virus scanned afterwards, but now IE/google chrome is not working, or anything that pulls down webpages. Skype still works, wow and SC2 work fine.

So I am guessing the virus blocked some port or somthing like that.

How do I reset everything? I already tried "reset settings" stuff in windows/ie internet options.

Also dragging files is not working, copying them, moveing them(move this file) work, but dragging them to a folder will not move them.

Reinstall whats not working, probably the AV deleted some files that were important for those programs.

I did, I even went ahead and installed google chrome, which went to the internet to download itsself. So I dont know what the deal is, something is blocked, just dont know how to fix it.

I do not feel like formatting windows, is there another way?

Well 1st I would do a online virus scan just to be sure your pc is ok, then would try a system restore if possible, later and if I couldnt identify the problem would format windows.

Check the sticky in the computer forum.

First get Malware bytes, update it, do a full scan.

If that doesn't work, download combofix. Print out the instructions and follow it.

You can do this all in safe mode btw.

    If nothing else works, reformat.

You have probably browser homepages set to fake addesses, possibly web proxy running on own computer, and quite likely also ip redirects in Windows' hosts-file.

Some of the fake AV scans are extremely hard to get rid of, but Malwerebytes is good starting point. If it doesn't help you can try CCleaner/Hijackthis to remove extra startup programs but it requires bit more knowledge from your part.

Re: Virus killed IE/GC but not wow/skype/ect

Are we sure it an issue of a virus still present?

I think its just that when the virus started it said something like "turn X off" or "make 1142 1242", so that is not a virus but a setting just changed.

No other way to reset the settings? Would a system restore restore the virus?

You are not going to like what I have to say but...
    You have been Hijacked!
    lol no srs you have.
If you choose to system restore which I don't recommend and othere on here probably wouldn't either
you may still have the same problem.

Sometimes anti virus software will rectify the situation.
What is happening is the virus isnt letting you access certain .exe programs.
You can connect to WoW or Vent for instance but not to other short cuts on your desktop like you tube etc.

What I suggest and you probably won't like it is to get your windows CD and reformat (save/back up files first) your hard drive. This will give you a clean slate unlike system restore. GL.

Re: Virus killed IE/GC but not wow/skype/ect

It's possible to clean your system, but it's not easy. Best way would be googling for instructions on how to remove the fake AV shit you installed by accident if you happen to remember it's exact name.

It has for sure altered your internet settings, but it's also totally possible it's hiding as a rootkit still to change back the settings on the minute you try to change your homepage from current porn (or whatever) advertisement and so on. You dont need to reformat and reinstall windows, but for novice users it might be easiest way to fix it.

If you can find the name of the virus you can google the tools to remove it possibly. Sometimes when you restart you will have the window to stop a program/process this is probably the virus. It's the "program not responding" one. See if you get that window.

Re: Virus killed IE/GC but not wow/skype/ect

    system restore fixed the problem.

What I did was when I first got th virus I restarted my computer beacause it would not l me do anything. I poped the task manager soon as windows started and killed the virus. I then found its location from msconfig start up applicatios ~"hjsdgffjesofsef" and just killed th exe file.

I used a couple sweeper programs to clean it.

Well thats the last time I look up anima from FFX for nostalgia's stake.

Re: Virus killed IE/GC but not wow/skype/ect

Get Firefox and NoScript addon for it. It'll protect you pretty damn well from user stupidity when surfing for warez or porn. It doesn't make you bulletproof, but closest thing to it.
