they've left 3.3.4 open in case they need to do an emergency client patch to fix some major error. Just like they have in the past.

It's the same with patches 3.0.5 -> 3.0.8

This question has come up on the very rare occasion that a "version number" was skipped because Blizzard has, generally, been fairly consistent in their numbering, and when one seems to be "skipped", they usually explain why on the forums (small patches being rolled into a later, larger patch).

While some companies "reserve the right to number them however, wherever, whenever" without any rhyme or reason, Blizzard has remained very organized about the numbering of their versions and revisions to make it easier on not only themselves for backtracking purposes, but for their fans and customers.

With all that taken into consideration, I would have been far less likely to take the e-peen route when responding to the original question than some seem to have taken.

This, so much. Blizzard "saved" 3.3.4 for a minor bug fix patch for 3.3.3 if something went wrong. Nothing that needed to be fixed client side (aka couldn't be hotfixed) occured, so Blizzard skipped it.

Some are reserved for possible bugfixes, others end up as internal builds.

More than likely 3.3.3a would have been a bugfix, 3.3.4 would have been if say, pallies ended up being 75% ahead of the other dps.

Most likely this. Still, i dont get why blizzard NEEDS to reserve the patch number. If a problem occured, they could just fix it with patch 3.3.4, and if it nothing occured, RS would be the 3.3.4 patch.
