Not wanting to buy BoEs is a fools errand. If, as I understand it, you ground your way to 80 without picking up any tanking gear you're massively behind the curve. Reputation pieces will help, but honestly Rep pieces are often at least as pricey as having the craftable equivalent made or shopping around for good prices on the BoE drops.Originally Posted by Fabrio
The right way to hop directly into 80 heroics as a tank is to tank your way through normals all the way up from 70. It's pretty much the only way to fill all your slots with tank gear. Alternate routes available this late in the expansion involve blowing lots of gold on BoEs and rep pieces. If neither of these works for you then you need to be running regulars (HoS, HoL, Nexus, UP, CoT) at 80 for gear before you can start heroics. If you won't do any of these things, you really shouldn't be tanking.
Trying to hop into LFD under 535 defense and 24k health (that's blue gear btw) is basically an insult to the other players in LFD. No group is going to want to work with you because not only will you be frequently on the verge of death, but even the world's best tanks couldn't hold threat off Triumph gear with stats like that.
Yes I know that some people successfully tanked heroics with lower stats than that in early Wrath, but they were going to specific dungeons, with a group recruited from guild/trade/lfg instead of assembled for you by LFD and there was an expectation back then that heroic dungeons would take (significantly) longer than they do now. Blizzard has recognized the shift in perception, that's why they've made it easier to get badges and BoE gear. They've also reduced the cost of craft-able pieces in multiple ways over multiple patches.
