I've never heard of such a thing and highly doubt it :P If you've randomly lost a character you've probably been hacked

I dont think so. I made a horde shammy on a random server about 2 years ago. Never touched him and he is still there. You might have gotten hacked.

if you freeze your account they will keep data alive for 6-9months (to lazy to look up)
after that, yes your account + chars is gone

They were in the beginning of wow. They removed that before BC if i remember. And they only deleted low levels characters after months of an inactive Account, not an inactive character.

This is untrue as i am just back from a 7 month break.

The armory probably just hasn't updated them since you haven't logged into your account for so long. No armory update = no wow-heroes update.

That's completely wrong. Your characters will never be deleted, and neither will your account. The only time a character is permanently deleted is if you delete it yourself, and then after a few months it is purged from the deleted character list. So unless you deleted them before you quit, they are still there.

The reason why you can't armory/wowheroes them because after couple of months of inactivity they stop refreshing/keeping data of you characters on official armory (from which pages like wowheroes get data).

Don't worry, your characters are safe.

they do not delete your characters ever, despite the length of your absence. You could leave for a year and come back and they would all still be there just as you left them.
