No, MTV wasn't always that bad. For example they used to play some excellent Metallica music videos ([1][2]).

However, looking at the Movie awards winners... Nothing surprising. The nominees are chosen by producers and executives at MTV (most probably among the most successful and teen-esque movies of the year, not among the most critically acclaimed ones) and then the public votes the winner by online voting.

MTV is aimed towards the mainstream pop/rap/R&B/etc. consuming teenage viewer-base. If you're not a mainstream pop/rap/R&B/etc. consuming teenager, you probably wont agree with anything that comes out of there. That's not really anything to write home about. Unfortunate as it is, this world has terrifyingly a lot of people who are into stuff like Twilight.

I am from that old MTV generation when they played music. I understand why MTV had to change, its the rise in how media is consumed, but its very sad also. MTV always seems to get alot of slack though, even when it played music, even back then MTV wasnt free of criticism.

MTV is much like how History channel also just went full reality TV...I dont watch either channels for like 10+ years now. At least back in Jackass days they had something MTV.
