Heroic raids

I have never been to a heroic raid, to go to a heroic raid do you have to complete the normal version of the raid? so to do heroic icc i would have to kill the lich king, etc

Heroic and normal are the same instance, but the raid leader has to have killed the Lich King in normal mode and can therefore change the instance to heroic mode, which only affects bosses. You don't have to have killed the LK yourself, just someone in the raid has to have, and is promoted to raid leader and changes the difficulty.
