I'm horde, and with the help of one of our guildy's alliance toons myself and another hunter in the guild both managed to snag this guy last night. It took a bit of trial and error but here's what I learned:

Timing is everything, and you won't get it on your first try.

After breaking free of the trap, the wolf will run up to melee range of you (or whoever is doing the quest), BEFORE the despawn timer starts. This can screw up your timing based on placement of the trap. The best way we found was to make sure the trap was as close to you (or whoever is doing the quest) as possible, so that when he breaks he won't have to run. This ensures consistency in the timing.

If you leave him in the trap too long he'll despawn (this happens about about 5.5-6 seconds left in the trap)

If properly timed you won't see the tame animation happen, he'll disappear right as your tame finishes, it will look as though the tame failed. Hit call pet and bam, black worg.

This is a pretty fun pet, he definitely gets some attention. I have a feeling he won't survive patch 4.0, since he's actually still got the oil "debuff" on him, and I forsee a pet reset with the patch. But in the meantime we have our darkwolves to play with.

Was a fun tame, had to have some help from a friend since I had already completed the quests ages ago.
Included my pics, and even switched to my OS to show him under TBW. Named him void, seems like a great name, tho I've been considering "BPSurvivor"

Whether or not the pet survives 4.0 is one thing, but I doubt there will be a pet reset with the patch. If by that you mean we lose all pets that we currently own. Don't think Blizz has ever done anything like that, except on BETA.

Ohh and add one more Hunter on Lightbringer with this pet. Welcome ExxonValdez!!!

Thanks for posting the name choices! I think it's so cool to see what people named theirs.

@Driizzt My guildy named his Exxon in reference to that spill as well.

Oh yeah, I wasn't trying to imply we'll lose any pets, Blizzard knows better. I'm just saying that since the effect is still an actual buff on the pet, if there's any sort of wipe to the pet system (like a talent reset or anything) it's possible we'll lose the effect. I'm hoping not but we won't know for sure till 4.0.

Named mine Hollow by the way.

    Hollow, nice

In regards to loosing the oil stained buff, it will probably happen from time to time (like it did in Arena for me), but let's hope Blizz doesn't hot fix that we can tame them with the quest item. I am definately not completing that quest, ever lol. It's come in handy to help others get their wolves as well.

Do you think it would be doable as a horde with just looking for a random ally on the quest? Or do you need the ally to know what you're doing so he can help in some way?

Yes, I know a few people on Petopia that got theirs this way. They hung around the quest area, when an Alliance player questing came by they did /wait and then loged on a level 1 Alliance character and whispered them asking if they would help them with the tame in exchange for some gold. I guess it's up to you how much you'd be willing to pay some random player to get the wolf, but it is doable that way. Gold always motivates people. ^^

Helped two friends get them earlier (done the quest on my hunter, one of the friends is multiboxing shammies at that level so will be getting them to the quest for tomorrow for me )

One major thing I noticed is that there is a timer between when the wolf gets within a certain range of the meat thrower and when they despawn. This timer is important! It is basically what you want to time your tame pet around. It is the reason they sometimes despawn when in the trap (if you throw the meat and your trap is too close, for instance).

Hunter stood between me and the wolf. Trap down about ten yards away, and meat thrown. I'd move back so that the wolf would not come in "crap range" of me. With no haste (gear off) and at 10~ seconds on trap, the tame would start. At as close to 0 seconds on trap as possible, I'd move into "crap range" and it would start its final timer. With a bit of trial and error, this resulted in two tames.

Both tames were thought failures - there is no animation, you get no confirmation at all. All that'll happen is, the wolf will despawn. It can despawn with or without the oil slick effect (one of each for our tames this evening). After we got one pet confirmed, my other friend summoned hers and it appeared oil covered. She was, needless to say, delighted.

Has anyone tried doing this today-ish?

I was told by a fellow Hunter that the taming of this was hotfixed.

I tried near 40 times a few hours ago and it was a no-go so far. I will keep trying, but was wondering where other might be sitting with this.

Jinky Wingnut doesnt give me any quests at all, is there any pre-pre quests ? I've faction changed since levling to 80. so im 100% sure i havent done it.

Edit: just checked on another 4 toons, none dont get quest on any. so must be a pre quest i guess.

fixed: complete The Mechagnomes and you get sendt to Jinky.

    It still works!

Just got mine a couple minutes ago.

I had done the quest but my bf still had 1 toon that had not. =)

It was pretty frustrating because most of my attempts had the wolf despawning before I even started the tame! But for the real attempts..

7 seconds was my "sweet spot" at 180 haste
8 seconds turned it into a gray wolf
6 seconds told me I didn't have a pet to summon

This is going to sound silly, but is it safe to put him in the stable? x_x I don't wanna lose this lol.

Also.. for those thinking that it'll go away because of the worgen thing.. the worgen was taken away, but..

I don't think the spirit wolves were taken away from people nor the spirits that you could get in Sholazar.. like the hydra or ooze or whatever they were.. I remember seeing people with those after they got fixed. So who knows if this will stay or not.
