    Healing and dpsing at once?

havnt played ptr yet. but after looking at some of the healing talent trees, it looks like they want healers to also use damaging attacks in healing rotations. like using smite in the disc tree with priests and shocks in the resto tree for shamans. kinda like using judgments with pallys currently. anyone have any feedback on this? looks kinda funky.

I don't play a healer at all (tanks FTW) but I think with the ramp up in difficulty in Cata there probably won't be enough breathing room to get off damaging attacks.

I expect these damaging abilities will be more for soloing purposes only.

I love it. With a bit of haste, those smites get off fast enough, and you get some awesome wings in return for it

The actual raids will have to tell how far you can go with dpsing, but i love the system

I'm not in beta, but from the videos I have watched, it doesn't look like you will have much time or mana to be dpsing with. If you overgear stuff I can see it being an option.

i think all the smite-things in the disc tree are for pvp.
but it's not rly that unusual to dps while healing, just look at paragon's firstkill of lk25hc, where the priest sets of several smites in p1.
mana is not a big deal in wotlk, so why don't do something usefull ? ^^

^ This. I think it's nice to be able to rip off a smite to help down a target while healing an ally for a pretty decent amount, 50/100%

I do think healers will be expected to provide some DPS. I've always been a resto druid, and looking at even just the 4.0.1 talents there are a ton of free wraths that we get from healing.

I.E. get a crit with some spell, get an instant cast, no mana, Wrath to cast at the boss. This is also why druids got tree of life changed; Blizz said it was unfair other classes can DPS and heal, but druids couldn't.

    EDIT-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I looked at the talent calculator again and the resto talent reduces wrath's mana cost by 100% and whenever you crit with it, it has a 12% chance to make starfire instant cast, so clearly they do expect healers to be providing DPS as well.

Resto Shaman are going to have to dps to save mana probably.

[11:50:45] Earthmender Duarn says: Shamanistic healing is a complex art. You can't just chain heal all day.

Blizzard stated that they want healers to be able to have damage attacks so they don't have to just stand around and do nothing all day (which is what currently happens on my shaman, Earth Shield > Pornhub ftw).

i think disc have to dps to get mana back using archangel so at least for them is going to be part of their rotation, specially in cata were mana is really important.

I have not specced into the 2 mana returning talents in the resto shaman tree on the beta as of yet. But to be clear. I have done heroic grim batol and heroic shadowfang keep and neither of these would I have any time to dps. Especially in SFK I was spamming the tanks most of the time, they get rocked in there. I'm sure once gear catches up things will be different.
