i partly agree with both of you.
"MUST SEE" sounds like it's supposed to be objective while it actually really isn't.
but i don't think we need to look carefully at every word we use in every post and recommendation either.

Well, I'm finding it more "fun" to be side by side with the other parties.
Now back to animes! Have anyone seen Gravitation, Loveless, Descendants of Darkness (Yami no Matsuei) and/or Junjou Romantica? Would recommend those if you love shounen ai ("light" boyXboy)

Descendants of Darkness - For this one, there's just something that doesn't feel right, however it is good. It's only "one-sided" love here, and that being the main villian in love with the main char(more or less "the hero").

Loveless - Well, who haven't seen catgirls before? However! There's also Catboys in this one. Found it cuuuute~

Gravitation - So, it's about a boy named Shindo Shuichi who's in a band called "Bad Luck", he gets terrible feedback from a song he wrote, but at the end of the 1st (2nd?) episode something insane is happening.

Junjou Romantica - A lot of funny moments in this one. This anime is about 3 "couples" who have their own nickname (named by the fans): "Team Romantica", "Team Egoist" and "Team Terrorist". (Don't remember the exact names, so they might be wrong.. Sorry!) And the "main characters in each of them" are somewhat mirrored like in their team names. (Romantica being.. Romantic? Egoist being egoist, and terrorist being a loving terrorist.)

HI, first time poster, long time reader, I'm just wondering how many of you guys are of the old school anime class. I myself have been an anime fan for a good part of the last 15 or so years( not including watch robotech, voltron, astroboy etc etc when i was a kid) and i reckon you can't get much better then all them old early 90's animes such as Roujin Z, Doomed Megalopolis, Dominion: Tank Police, Battle Angel Alita, and of course Ranma 1/2 to just name a few. I also notice that no one has mentioned some of what i would call "the essential" anime titles such Ninja Scroll, Wings of Honneamise, Armitage III also to just to name a few

Absolutely zero clue if this one has been made into anime but I really really enjoyed reading it
    Rabbit Doubt.

Genre: Drama, Horror, Mature, Mystery, Psychological, Shounen
    Summary:
There's a game going around Japan called 'Rabbit Doubt'. The premise of the game is that all of the players are rabbits in a colony, and one amongst them is randomly chosen to be a wolf that infiltrated the group of rabbits. Every round, the wolf kills off a rabbit, and every round, the group tries to figure out which of the rabbits is actually a wolf in disguise. Sometimes the kids who play this game decide to meet up in person, and Yuu, Mitsuki, Rei, Hajime, Eiji, and Haruka have done just that. Unfortunately, one of them has decided to take on the mantle of the wolf and has already killed once. Who is the wolf, and can they be stopped before everyone meets a very unpleasant end?

I suggest you don't think that much about who the murderer was if you're good at finding out who the culprit is in mystery stories

And Sy, did you abandon the fan art thread? :<
Everytime someone abandons that thread a baby murloc dies.

i started watching animes only about three or four years ago.
so no, i'm definitely not "old school"^^
and i reckon you can't get much better then all them old early 90's animes such as Roujin Z, Doomed Megalopolis, Dominion: Tank Police, Battle Angel Alita, and of course Ranma 1/2 to just name a few.
    honestly? that's obviously highly subjective.
those animes look bad to me and they got some of the worst ratings i've seen on my anime site, even from someone who i know to like some old animes.
and many old animes are just outdated.

now don't get me wrong, "old" doesn't equal "bad". but the animation is nowhere near what today's animes can do and the story is probably not very unique, creative or interesting either.
many popular old animes (like Kidou Senshi Gundam) have been milestones when they were released, because they had new stories, creative characters, modern animation and/or new designs of storytelling. but if you watch it now, it's gotten worse simply because there are sooo many other animes which copied big parts of this milestone, making Kidou Senshi Gundam itself not unique or interesting anymore.

technology evolves, storydesign and -telling evolves, animes evolve.
I also notice that no one has mentioned some of what i would call "the essential" anime titles such Ninja Scroll, Wings of Honneamise, Armitage III also to just to name a few
i watched Ninja Scroll and liked it (i even thought about listing it with my favorites, but decided against it), but i definitely wouldn't call it "essential".

Sadly ill disagree here aswell, better story telling, art etc have kept the anime moving forward, looking back theres milestones like Sy said but the content and genres have vastly expanded since those times.

Elfen Lied is an OK anime. I was annoyed the whole time i was watching it because of the pointless nude scenes. No fucking point, it was just there to catch the Otaku crowd.

i don't mind some ecchi, but i agree that there were a few pointless fan service scenes in Elfenlied.

what? i think you missed the point of the word otaku. "otaku" just meens something like "geek", like anime/computer/cosplay/manga geeks and collectors. it doesn't have anything to do with ecchi/fan service in general.

    Aye... :/

    Ah well OT:
I guess most people have already watched/read this (and I suppose this has already been mentioned) but I have to post it because it's one of my all time favorite :x

    Love Hina

Genre: Comedy, Ecchi, Harem, Romance, Shounen
    Summary:
Keitaro has had great difficulty getting into the university of his choice and no luck in meeting women. In a desperate effort to go into seclusion and study for his entrance exams, he decides to ask to stay in his grandmother's hotel. His plans are ruined when he discovers that the "hotel" is actually an all-girls dormitory ... and some serious distractions ensue.

One of the best comedies ever made <3
Gotta love the randomness... and some romance in the story is also good

Well, to the reply's from Sy and Deamoneyes i agree with you guys 200% that the animation nowadays is a million times better then what they were in the early 90's but, I disagree with the statement that the storytelling was not as good as it is today for the fact that there has only really been a handfull of animes in the past few year that have stood out from the normal generic anime stories and back then it was all new and it was amazing that their were "cartoons" telling some really touchy subjects. And i guess i just hold the early stuff on a higher level for nostalgic reasons anywho here are some recommendations i haven't seen up in the thread yet.

Martian Successor Nadesico - The series takes place in the year 2196. Earth is at war with a race of alien invaders called the "Jovian Lizards". A company called Nergal designs a space battleship, the ND-001 Nadesico. While the ship is powerful and its crew consists of the top civilian experts in their fields, these individuals tend to have "some slight personality disorders"
Watch if you liked: Full Metal Panic, Godannar

Cowboy Bebop - Cowboy Bebop revolves around a crew of bounty hunters living in the spaceship named Bebop. They are a team of bounty hunters who travel the Solar System trying to apprehend bounties. Jet Black is the owner of the Bebop who has partnered with Spike Spiegel for his diverse combat skills. During their travels, the Bebop ship gained new crew members such as Ein, Faye, and Edward.
Watch if you liked: Samurai Champloo, Black Lagoon

i guess you're talking about the 1st season? if so, you need to watch FUMOFFU! now!!
there is much less action but simply great humor all the time.
the 3rd season (The Second Raid) is more like the first one again.

the great majority of animes are indeed not very special or creative in terms of storytelling, because most animes are relatively cheap productions and made for kids or teens (although the percentage of those is not as high in japan as it is in western countries).
but it's only natural to judge animes by the best ones we have today, because they show what is possible. and that's not only true for animes. the great majority of computer games for example are cheap productions too, which are designed for people who don't really have experience with "good" games.

also, i guess you mentioned and/or remembered relatively few of the old animes as well, because those were the ones who stood out. it doesn't really make sense to compare the popular and good ones of the old animes to the average and relatively bad ones of the new anmies. that's a common mistake when people try to compare old and new things.
back then it was all new and it was amazing that their were "cartoons" telling some really touchy subjects.
actually, no. it may have been new for you and probably a lot of people in western countries, but if you're talking about 15 year old animes that concept was not new.
animes were already quite popular since about 1980 in japan (again Kidou Senshi Gundam as good example, which was released in 1979) and one of the first popular "touchy cartoons" was Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - in 1937.
And i guess i just hold the early stuff on a higher level for nostalgic reasons
fair enough, partly explains why "new" anime fans don't think as good about many of the animes you mentioned as you do.

your "watch if you liked:" thing is a nice idea btw

Lets take it one step further and talk about the roots of Anime which was Manga which meaning started around 1798 and among the first books to be called Manga was created in 1814, since you mentioned a Disney i guess its just as fair to say that Comics (the origin of the western Cartoons) whoms roots goes back to the 18th century aswell, more modern style comics came around in the 19th century thou.

strictly speaking, i wasn't talking about the roots of animes, but merely about when "touchy cartoons" became popular and known by a greater number of people.
Disneys' success did influence many animes though.

Ah yes, i was more on the current age of the style that is manga (which essentially is anime), so happy 196th birthday manga *whistles*

Btw was Snow White really the first touchy story that was published?
