Canadian, yeah.
Why the 390X? I'm not sure if my 650W will be enough to handle it.

An AMD R9 390X is a superior card to the GTX 980 and is cheaper to boot.
We're not even talking about some of DX12's features yet either (the most important ones too!).
What PSU is it you have along with the rest of your system? If it's a 650W on the 12V rail(s) you generally are perfectly fine unless you have a Hexa/Octacore Intel and overclocking that to insane heights (Intel Hexa- and Octacores turn into actual fireballs when overclocking.. completely different to stuff like Skylake).
Power Supply has 51 amps on its 4 12V rails, It's an EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G1.
Every benchmark I've looked at has slated the 980 as a better performer than the 390X. Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Metro Last Light, etc. That's why I was grabbing it.

390X is future proof via hardware level async shaders for DX12.

I was completely unaware. So, I need to check out some 2016 benchmarks of the 980 vs the 390X. I'm going to go look, but could anyone else enlighten me with some hard evidence that the 390X is the better buy?
Because, like you say...$100 cheaper for a better card. If that's true, then that's a no-brainer.

I am seriously finding nothing that indicates to me that the 390X is going to perform better than the 980. Every benchmark I can find is stating that the 980 is faster.
I'm not calling you guys liars at all. I'd like to save $100, I promise! I just want some tangible proof that'll show that I'm going to get a better experience with the 390X over the 980. There's an MSI R9 390X at work and it's 10% off. After tax (and before any discount) it would be $620 CAD. That's a fucking deal, and I don't ahve to wait for shipping.
Prove to me that it's the better buy and I'll buy it.

This is the most up to date video I could find, been searching since 6 PM
They're really similar cards. Very similar cards. I just worry that, even at 1080p, I'm going to have buyer's remorse with the 390X.
Am I just being unreasonable? Should I just suck it up and buy the 390X tomorrow? Gah!

I'm a pretty big nvidia fan, but the thing is that 390X destroys Maxwell in DX12, so there's no point in getting a card that will suffer in upcoming games this year.

Also built another PC out of the "scrap" I have laying around. Selling it to a colleague. Pictures coming later when I get back home, but specs first.
CPU: Intel i5 2500k
Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 2x4GB 1600MHz
GPU: AMD R9 290X (reference)
SSD: Samsung 830 Evo 250GB
PSU: Seasonic M12 520w
Case: Corsair Vengeance C70
This is a good video. I mainly linked it because he talks about FO4, but the rest is also good. You can google the russion benchmarks yourself if you are interested At about 10:00 he starts talking about FO4 and the new 1.3 patch (that changed performance a bit for both Nvidia and AMD)
A decision was made today. You guys provided me with a moment of clarity last night...there's no need to spend $300 more for a few more FPS for the next couple years. Those LEDs, that clock speed, it's not worth $300 extra.
Regular price before tax was $609 at our store. Staff discount + 10% off an open box version brought my total (after tax) to $570 CAD, about $420 USD. Plus there's a $20 MIR!
The customer who returned this card had ordered two for Crossfire, and one was defective. He didn't even get to installing this one into the system but he had opened the box already, so 10% off for it to go back on the wall for sale.
I'm glad I listened to you guys. Installing tonight!

New Rig
Corsair Air 540
Maximus VIII Hero
6600k (4.5GHz) - Not done OC'ing yet.
Asus Strix 980ti OC
240gb Samsung M.2 MVNe SSD
2x Crucial M4 128gb (Raid 0 - Old drives that I'm reusing)
1TB caviar black, and a terribad 500gb caviar blue I'm using as a recovery drive.
Somehow managed to brick the M.2 SSD on day1, that was a bit of a pain in the ass, but all is well now!
Next on the shopping list : A new monitor , and some red Sata cables
Will get some serious tax returns come spring, kinda want to wait for Nvidia 1000 series and get something (MAYBE) 4k; or 21:9 curved 1440p/120hz+
Recently put together a new build after my previous one began to show age. Initially purchased a Gigabyte R9 390, but returned it due to a number of issues. Rather than buying another 390, I decided go with an R9 Fury and haven't looked back since. I bought an ASUS MG278q monitor to go with the new build, and i'm loving everything about it so far. The transition from a GTX 570 at 1080p 60hz to the R9 Fury at 1440p 144hz has been amazing, and Freesync is a really fantastic feature.
The build as it sits now:
With the R9 390 that I originally had in it:
Desktop: i5-6600K @ 4.6GHz | ASRock Z170m Extreme4 | Corsair H100i V2 | 16GB Corsair Vengeance @ 3000MHz | Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro | 500GB Samsung EVO M.2 | EVGA Supernova G2 650w | Corsair 350D | Asus MG278q | Razer Blackwidow Chroma | Razer Deathadder
---
Laptop: i7-4700MQ | 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 | GT 755m SLI | 1TB HD | 128GB SSD
