Scary, I was just thinking about this topic the other day to myself when I pressed the button on mine and nothing happened. Obviously I pressed it again and it was fine, but it's good to know I'm not the only person who's questioning this now. If it's 7-9 years or so like people say, I think we're all prepared to have it up until the day we quit WoW.
... Well, at least I don't think I'll be playing in 9 years time.
Are you sure I can just deattach it for, say 3 days? And then after that when I am done, I can just go back to the same authenticator and attatch it to my account again?
Just asking, since its a rather cheap and simple device, I just thought it would be some sort of "one-time activator", and disable it = buy a new one and attatch the new one instead.
Thanks for reply btw.
Give me a minute, I'm going to try it with mine just to let you know.

I was able to successfully remove the Authenticator from my one account and attach it to another.
You shouldn't have any issues.
Edit:
The Process it asked me to do:
Removing the Authenticator
Put in two Authenticator Codes.
Re-adding the Token
Clicked on the Link to Add the Token.
Email was sent to verify.
Clicked on Link.
Put in 10 Digit Serial Number on Back of Token.
Put in 6 Digit Authentication Code.
Very Simple.
Solution to battery problem:
Get a mobile authenticator. Never runs out of juice (unless your phone's battery is empty ofc, but you can charge that one).
Or better yet, Blizzard should make a program that runs inside your WoW Client to generate a code (somehow... I don't know how that would work xD)
