I didn't think so. There really wasn't a whole lot of dialogue compared to other movies, particularly since she's by herself for the majority of the movie so it's not overdone, imo.

    That's very reassuring, thanks.

Gravity. 10/10. Been waiting on Alfonso's Gravity ever since I've first heard about it 5 years ago, what a trip it has been. First cast they announced was Angeline Jolie and Robert Downy Jr. Needless to say, I'm glad they picked Sandra and George, they had the gravity (dem puns though) for the roles required. Both Angelina and Sandra have kicked ass before, but seeing Angelina in this role would not have been as good, as she would of been as cool as a cucumber and not panicking as normal people would. Very beautiful though, and Alfonso does his magic again with the camera work, and you see it done as the very first scene, one 13 minute long shot (digitally of course) but it's so smooth. Seeing it in anything but IMAX 3D is a waste of time and money. If you're going for anything less just wait for it on DVD. I was immersed as fuck, great experience all around.

I loved the plot twist when I first watched it. In retrospect the movie doesn't make any sense with the twist.
I'm happy they did it though, as I really enjoyed watching it. Gets a 7.5/10 from me. Great acting all around.

I wasn't sure about Gravity, it was nice surprise. If it becomes available here in 4D I will probably go to watch it one more time.

It fit well. And to be honest she was surprisingly cute/hot in the movie.

My part in this story has been decided. And I will play it well.

    Rush - 8/10

It's so hard with these movies. There are two kinds of movies, the high budget blockbusters, like Star Trek Into Darkness, Pacific Rim, Man of Steel, The Hobbit, The Dark Knight, etc, and the "Oscar movies", like Mud, Prisoners, Gravity, Rush, etc. Now, I'm a fan of the speculative, so I love sci fi and fantasy, but it's really hard to compare them with the other movies, who usually are just all around "good". Like Shawshank Redemption, best movie ever if you ask IMDb, but I don't know how many thinks it's the best movie they've ever watched, it's just that it's a movie that you can't really "hate" or "dislike" much. How do I compare Rush to Star Trek Into Darkness or Monsters University?

I dislike how these movies just win the Oscars, while the big budget movies that actually make money get snorted at. It's like reviewers and pros vs the public, Rotten Tomatoes vs IMDb, Lord of the Rings vs Shawshank Redemption. There's lately been a lot of talk about blockbusters being not very thought-provoking or being popcorn flicks. It's been said that fantasy and science fiction is only worth for what they tell us about the real world, and everything else is petty escapism. I think it's important to consider the themes of the movies we watch more often, to consider what the movie explores and concludes with it's themes.

Reviewers and pros vs the public... hm. There are a lot of movies that the public hasn't noticed (lack of budget for advertising) and those shouldn't be ignored IMO. Also there are a lot of big budget movies which honestly are quite bad compared to what they should have been (thinking about Dark knight rises and avengers), which do earn an absolute ton of money. I think it's important to have some non-biased reviews which actually matter for the public.

    Pacific Rim - 6.5/10

slightly cheesy and outrageous and very over the top, but a lot of fun to watch aswell. was sort of like transformers / ironman meets cloverfield. also it gets a point for having a guy dressed as Matt smiths Doctor who. i wasn't too fond of the overly british scientist, seemed totally out of place. plot was pretty predictable, but its pretty obvious the plot wasn't all that important in this film, its a bit like complaining about the plot of a porn film. the movie got a bit slow in the middle, start off brilliantly, then gets slow, then just turns into fighting again for the last part. for most of the film, its just monsters and robots slapping each other around Hong Kong, whats not to love??

    Gravity

    Bads:

    1. Uninteresting story. It's about some astronauts whose ship gets destroyed, and they have to scramble to stay alive. That's really it. Maybe I'm being unrealistic by hoping that there was going to be more to it, that there were going to be some deeper problems (and there were), but ultimately it was something to take at face value. Stuck in space. Gotta get out.

    2. Speaking of going deeper, I feel like they missed a great opportunity to explore the other sides of Sandra's character. If you've seen the movie, you know about her life before being an astronaut. It gets described, and it does play a role during some critical parts of the movie, but it fails to offer the substance that I wish it did. It would have been a wonderful way to explore the more psychological impact of what's going on.

    3. This probably only applies to me, and some of you wouldn't even call it a bad thing, but it just didn't give you time to catch your breath. As someone who suffers from anxiety, I feel like I was whipped around with every minute of the movie. Is she going to be safe? Okay, good, she it - no wait! Oh goodness grab onto that thing! Okay, good, she's all good - WAIT she slipped! Go that way, go that way! Okay, good - WAIT! It was a little bit much for my taste.

    4. The biggest offender is the juxtaposition of sadness and humor. There's a scene in the movie where she is speaking with some Chinese(?) guy, and it is without a doubt the most devastating part of the movie. Good thing I had on my 3d glasses; there were rivers under my eyes. A couple of moments later, everything is okay, and a joke is made - the audience even laughs a bit. What? That TOTALLY ruined the moment. Of course, going back to #3, it gets more serious right after, but I was still let down.

    5. The ending. It didn't leave you hanging, which is good, but it failed to provide me with closure that I needed.

5.5 Sandra's hair. I know it had to be short for the role, but I like her long locks.

    Goods:

    1. The visual effects were OUTSTANDING. Absolutely beautiful and marvelous. I really don't know what else to say here, it was a masterpiece.

    2. Sandra absolutely killed her role. Every single thing she says and does is beyond remarkable. It's hard to believe that she's an actor at some times.

    3. Symbolism. My dad really didn't notice anything, but there was a ton of symbolism that did add to the character development. From the way she lay - or float - after she first gets into the space station, to the little toys that float around in zero gravity; it's obvious that someone took the time to think about them, and I appreciate that.

    4. Action. Bad things don't really happen in this movie. Absolutely awful, terrible, horrendous things happen. Because of this, it's ensured that you're always going to be on the edge of your seat, waiting to see how that obstacle will be overcome.

    5. Didn't give you time to catch your breath. I know I put this on the bad list, but it's also a good thing. It keeps your heart pounding, and you're not shown a Paranormal Activity-esque movie - that being 10 minutes of action with 60 minutes of filler. You're given an hour and a half of content.

Overall: 9/10. This is a marvelous movie that everyone should see at least once. Although I was more wordy with my bads, that doesn't mean that they prevail. Compared to the brilliance of the rest of the film, they are just minor trifles. But definitely see this in IMAX 3D - I can see it being a little underwhelming if you don't.

Edit: Totally forgot about the absolutely amazing intro. It starts off as a black screen, then some text comes up, the music gets louder and louder, the final line of text comes up and says something about how sound can't be transferred in space, the music is literally probably as loud as it could be, then a shot of earth from space - completely silent - for probably a minute. Sent dem chills.

    forgot aswell;

    After earth - 4/10

don't really have a whole lot to say about this, other than i don't like Will smiths kid. not the worst actor, just didn't feel right for the role, seemed way to young for the part imo, not sure how old he is, but he looks about 12 and that role does not fit him at all, im guessing the only reason he was cast is because he's Will Smiths son. Film would have been better if there was a more convincing actor taking the main spot, needed to be at least 18 years old imo.
an ok story, but i find the backstory more interesting, i'd rather have watched the initial alien attacks and Will Smith learning to ghost rather than 2 hours of his son running through forest.

Media, or movies, say two purposes, entertainment and life enrichment. The question becomes, is blockbusters just escapism and is "Oscar movies" where the enrichment is at? Oscar movies are well known, or criticized for usually being "art" films or political films, but political films do at least tell us something about the real world, or explore a theme that matters to our world. Some blockbusters does pull off a clever theme, like The Dark Knight, and to some extent Lord of the Rings (there's some good things and speeches hiding in there, Sam in particular has given his fair share of enrichment), Inception, etc.

The question is, does blockbusters do this enough? Is there enough enrichment? Or should they focus more on their themes, on provoking us to think about the morals and messages? Elysium had an interesting theme at least, no matter what else one might say about that movie.

    Gravity 9/10

Sooooo good, very unique movie and it looked fantastic in 3D/Imax. George Clooney was really good in it as well.

-1 because Sandra Bullock went to my rival high school.

Regardless, I totally enjoyed the movie, more over so considering it's from a real event.
