    Interstellar: 8/10
    Very impressive, not flawless though.

I doubt anyone truly knew what the main focus (genre) of the movie was going to be, before walking into the cinema. Was it exploration/adventure, drama on a spaceship, a visionary art piece or a thrilling ride?
It's kind of all of these.
In the beginning I thought that I knew where the movie was going to go, but I was very wrong. After about an hour it got really, really intense and really dark and I absolutely adored it. The score was brilliant as well. The ending was too happy though, I would say. The emotional "omph" wasn't as great as it could have been.
EDIT: Somehow I was shocked by Matt Damons's appearance in this movie.
EDIT 2: I keep thinking about this movie and the soundtrack haunts me. My 8/10 might be selling it short.

    Divergent - 6/10

A fairly average movie that felt like it didn't quite know what it wanted to be. It struck me as being like a less interesting version of the Hunger Games with poor pacing that led much of the action to happen towards the end of the film. There was a decent amount of character development for the two main characters and I gave an extra point for the satisfying eye candy that is the male lead.

All this hype over Interstellar. I'm not sold on it just yet just looks like Gravity with emotions.

That's your loss I guess? I don't know what you're trying to achieve by writing that. You want us to tell you that's it's not Gravity?

    John Wick - 8/10
Extremely well made action flick. It does everything right but doesn't do anything new. The whole Baba Yaga thing got kind of irritating, but definitely not to the point where it made the movie as a whole less enjoyable.

Just go to see it and then tell your opinion.. Blind opinions are just stupid. It's nothing like gravity.

Interstellar isn't even remotely comparable to it, except the fact that it takes place in space. Gravity was a movie where you would clench your butt-cheeks for one and a half hour and hope that the main character made it out alive (with incredible 3D I must add).

This one is nothing like that. Interstellar is an emotional and thrilling experience that will stick with you for days. The trailers tell you nothing at all, so don't judge it off of those. Worth noting is that for Interstellar, the most detailed and most accurate model yet of a black hole and its effect on light was created. It looks absolutely stunning.

Interstellar 7/10 the "twist" in the end was not even nearly on par with what Nolan usually comes up with. Also it's just not a very entertaining movie, I mean it's not boring during the 3 hours it lasts but there is no "wow!" factor either.

John Wick 8/10 Brilliant action movie.

Nightcrawler 10/10 Truly shocking and wonderful movie, one of the best I've ever seen.

Interstellar was just O.K. to me. If I had to grade it on a report card, I'd give it a B-. Saw it at the IMAX here in Calgary and the movie was beautiful. But the main gripe I had was the way it ended. American audiences needing to be catered to really hurts this film for me. The last 25-30 mins was so unnecessary but I get the feeling Nolan thought people woulden't understand. Did he really need to see Murph again? It got a bit farfetched but I disregarded that because of the genre. To those trying to compare it to 2001 or anything, they're not the same thing. 2001 is a work of art that is thought provoking and Interstellar is a beautiful visual piece.

I'm also loving the quality of movies in theaters currently. Gone Girl, Interstellar, Birdman, Nightcrawler, John Wick, Fury seem like great films. I can't wait to see Nightcrawler and Birdman, I think they'll be the real class and not to mention Inherent Vice is only a month away!

I found Interstellar a ton more thought provoking than 2001, but whatever. I don't really get why you think the ending catered to an American audience. Because he didn't die?

The Purge: 1 ~ 10 A stupid movie with an interesting premise that's let down by stupid characters making stupid decisions that lead to increasingly stupid situations. If its purpose was to show me how stupid people are in the near future, then it's brilliant filmmaking: 10 ~ 10.

    Interstellar (2014): 9.5/10

First of all, this had almost nothing to do with 2001, people who compared each other probably didn't see either of them. I frankly got more Contact and Apollo 13 vibes from it. 2001 is still the better movie though.

Anyway with that said, Nolan came very close to perfection, but I had some very tiny gripes with it, like I felt disconnected from the back and forth jumping between the Earth and outer space scenes, and there were some scenes that were a bit unnecessary to the plot that could have cut the length a bit. Oh and obviously the jump into a black hole and survive thingy (not what happens in the black hole per se, but before entering it is something no one can survive).

It was an emotional and thrilling journey all the way to the end. But the best thing about this movie was this: I went to this with some buddies, one of whom hates sci-fi and went reluctantly, he has the complete opposite taste of me in movies, but in the end he was completely blown away, even asked me for similar movies. And to put an apt meme for this happy occurrence: B R A V O N O L A N.

Nightcrawler was a 9.5/10 for me, great movie. Amazing performance from Jake Gylenhaal, I'd imagine he'll be in oscar talks for best actor. I loved how it was unpredictable as it went on and you just kept wanting to watch it.

Redline anime version 8/10 I enjoyed watching it despite it being about racing characters were interesting too

    Interstellar - 9/10

I am still a bit lost from the movie, but the idea and just the fact that Chris Nolan threw another mind fuck at us pleases me. I love these crazy movies he makes. After reading a bit about it after the movie, it makes more sense now. Great movie if you don't think about it a bit too much.

The thing that happens here is that these five-dimensional "humans" transport him out. They can control gravity, remember? Why he lands outside of Saturn though? I suppose these beings did that on purpose as well.

Rosewater 8/10. Solid movie, the actors really worked well with the roles. There was a bit of what looked like actual green movement footage too.

Better question is why does someone from Calgary think people 3 hours south of them are radically different. I mean Chicago is 3 hours north of me and I wouldn't say anything is specifically made for those "Chicagoans". Pretty ignorant statement. As for the movie I can't go as far as "love" but its damn close. I need to watch it again. It's not my favorite movie of the year but I haven't been this immersed in a film in a long time. I can't really give it a rating at this point. No lower than 8/10

    Automata - 8/10

Absolutely loved it. My only issue with it was the pacing but even still it felt appropriate. I had never heard of it actually and it's description piqued my interest. So glad it did.

    In descending order of score:

    - X-Men: Days of Future Past - 8/10. Excellent in many ways. Only hated the casting of Mystique (why the change from the original?!). It tried better than most movie sci-fi to resolve timeline issues, so I'm pretty impressed.

    - Manhunter (1986) - 8/10. Significantly better tension, plot and, oddly enough, horror moments than Red Dragon (2002). Recommended.

    - Batman: Assault on Arkham - 7.5/10. Watched this based on a recommendation in this thread. Surprised by this animation. The amount of content, characters and style was surprisingly adult. It was almost like watching a Western anime in some ways. I continue to be astonished just how much better DC Comics are at creating movies compared to Marvel...

    - Automata (2014) - 7.5/10. Nice sci-fi. The principle actor could have been better and it is a retelling of old themes in a thriller-like manner, but at least it is less child-like and patronizing than some (looking at you Spielberg!).

    - Miracle Mile - 6/10. Excellent start to a movie. It remained above average by spanning genres and by its ending. Had to dock half a point for strange decisions made by ordinary people in life-death situations.

    - Guardians of the Galaxy - 5.5/10. Too childish in general for me throughout, including speech, and basic logic (why wouldn't you shoot something out of the air if you didn't want it to touch the ground?!). The visuals artificially kept me from fast fowarding through most of it, so it didn't drop to average or below rating. Only value of it is the hinted history of some of the characters and the very tenuous link to the original Marvel Universe.

    - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - 5/10. Started well enough, then began to bore me with its pacing and soap opera like situations. Became unrealistic in so many ways (and no, I'm not talking about the speaking apes or horses, amazingly!), that before I knew it I was fowarding through 2/3rds of it. In addition, this contained no advancement of this franchise's story imo, other than more of Caesar's story. Too much was skipped about how humans came to truly have the lesser hand.
