I remember posting here (i think it was here) a few years ago regarding a WoW pc, all i got was "Quad core's are overkill" etc etc etc. give it a few years and it will be "12 cores are over kill, octocores are more than enough for WoW".

The moral of the story? if someone wants to purchase a 6core processor (i7 etc etc) and they have the money to do so, let them do it, dont put them down as it being overkill, even if it will not show a significant (10% or more) increase in performance as in a few years time, things can and more than likely will change.

Its better to be somewhat future proof than having to shell out in 1/2 years time for a new setup

Planning a hardcore gaming computer to last more than two years is a pipe dream anyway, 99% of people can not afford to pay for such a system so the best deal is to buy midrange stuff every few years and just bite the bullet with constant upgrades.

The sad fact is that AMD came up with dualcore processors on 2005, and majority of games still aren't multithreaded 6 years later. Even Photoshop took few whole generations before it had any kind of multithread support. Betting on multicores being mainstream is still a bad idea when normal desktop computers can do with 2-4 cores just fine, 3-4 being the most optimal number for WoW + watching porn on the second monitor, or something else from youtube. Currently and for the foreseeable next two years you really do not need more than 4 cores unless you're either doing lots of virtualization or running math-heavy properly multithreaded applications such as 3D modeling or video rendering.

Funny, on my 2xQD Xeon it only ever uses 2 - it *never* uses 3.

I'm pretty sure theres a way to make your 6 core act like 3 "super-cores". I remember reading that about some 6 core review or something.

Doesn't work that way. If a program is not multithreaded, it can only run in one core at a time.

Funny that it spreads over 4 cores on my i5. Sounds like you have a configuration problem.

You can use notepad, wordpad, whatever. Just add SET gxApi "d3d11" to Config.WTF or add -d3d11 to the WoW shortcut.

    in the config.wtf

    SET processAffinityMask "191"

that should help use six cores, found it on wowwiki search for CVar_processAffinityMask

mmo forums wont let me post links yet.
