    i5 760 vs. i7 870

So I've heard, that the i5 is BETTER for gaming?
And that the i7 is ONLY good for video editing, making movies etc.

Is this true? I thought that the i7 would be able to perform equally OR better then the i5 for gaming? But also better then the i5 for video editing etc.
Both are LGA1556's, and I'm going to be using only 4GB of RAM.

It has to do with the nature of Hyperthreading. Two physical cores will always be better than a single core hyper threaded with 2 threads passing through it. With most games not using more than 2-3 threads, Windows will throw the threads on whatever it wants (usually a physical and its virtual) since it just sees all the cores and vcores as 8 cores, which can reduce gaming performance a little bit. the i5 760 doesn't have this problem.

With video editing, or anything else that gets benefit from using more than 4 cores, then HT will give you an advantage, despite the slight drawback of pumping 2 threads through one pipe.

Lol... I'm so dumb, none of that even looked like english to me as I read it, so it's true the i5 is BETTER?
Will the i7 show dramatic decrease in performance?

Long answer: see Asera's port. It's situational, really.
Short answers, to the questions as you posed them: "no", and "no"

But you asked for dramatic decrease. And the answer was given.

Like I said, it's freaking situational!

Theres a performance difference, but it's small!

But the i7 is also an extra 100 bucks!

So why bother getting the i7!!!!

    read!!

But yeah, I'm going to be gaming only, so I guess I should just buy the i5.

    Thanks to all

Or he can just switch to AMD and be happy

But, seriously.. HP is screwing a bit with performance, but a decrease in it would not be noticable unless you are trying really hard to spot it.
Then again, i5 is alot cheaper(=

It's Intel Processors for your computer, it goes onto the motherboard.

    i5 760, $209
    i7 860, $212

It's on sale here in Perth, if the reduction is barely noticeable I'll go with the i7

Or you can get the Xeon server chip with hyperthreading for about the same cost as the i5.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819117226

Just giving you some options. Personally I would go for the i5.

If the price difference is really only $3 then take the i7. HT can slow you down in games but it's not really notable, and the -860 is more futureproof CPU.

On the other hand Sandy Bridge coming out in month or two...

the i7 with windows XP sucks as windows XP is uselss at getting performance out of that many cores, its also not great with the i5 but is less crippling to the performance. With either I would highly recommend windows 7 which assuming this is a new machine it will have, but if you are upgrading the hardware of an older machine it is something you will need to consider.
