Armakus' Guide for Mount Collectors: To 100 and Beyond!

Since the patch before Wrath (the one that included the addition of achievements and the mount tab in character info) players of all kinds have started collecting mounts. This guide was made to help players of any kind - hardcore, casual, and everywhere in between - collect mounts from the far reaches of Azeroth.

There are over 174 mounts (or 176, if you're horde) in game that you can collect! For reaching 50 and 100 mounts, a special mount will be rewarded to you. An Albino Drake for 50, and (my personal favorite) a Dragonhawk for 100. Alliance players get a blue dragonhawk, and horde players get a red one.

This guide will be divided into several parts, as listed below to keep things orderly:
    Part 1.0 - Faction mounts
-Part 1.1 - Alliance factions/mounts for each faction
-Part 1.2 - Horde factions/mounts for each faction
Part 2.0 - Mounts earned from quest rewards and/or dailies
    -Part 2.1 - Argent Tournament
    -Part 2.2 - Hyldnir Spoils
    -Part 2.3 - Vashj'ir Questline
    Part 3.0 - Achievement Mounts
-Part 3.1 - Wrath of the Lich King Achievement Mounts
-Part 3.2 - Cataclysm Achievement Mounts
Part 4.0 - Miscellaneous Reputation Mounts
-Part 4.1 - Sons of Hodir
    -Part 4.2 - Kurenai/Maghar
    -Part 4.3 - Cenarion Expedition
    -Part 4.4 - Ramkahen
    -Part 4.5 - Netherwing
    -Part 4.6 - Sha'tari Skyguard
    -Part 4.7 - The Oracles
    -Part 4.8 - Wyrmrest Accord
    -Part 4.9 - Winterspring Frostsaber/Venomhide Ravasaur
    Part 5.0 - Drop Mounts
    -Part 5.1 - Pre-BC Drop Mounts
-Part 5.2 - Burning Crusade Drop Mounts
-Part 5.3 - Wrath of the Lich King Drop Mounts
-Part 5.4 - Cataclysm Drop Mounts
    Part 6.0 - PVP Mounts
    -Part 6.1 - Stormwind/Orgrimmar Mount Vendor
-Part 6.2 - Alterac Valley Mounts
    -Part 6.3 - Halaa Mounts
-Part 6.4 - Tol Barad Mounts
    -Part 6.5 - Wintergrasp Mounts
    -Part 6.6 - Gladiator/Grand Marshal Mounts
    Part 7.0 - Profession Mounts
    -Part 7.1 - Engineering
    -Part 7.2 - Tailoring
    -Part 7.3 - Alchemy
    -Part 7.4 - Fishing
    -Part 7.5 - Archaeology

Part 1.0 - Faction mounts: Requires exalted reputation with each respective group in order to buy the mounts, which can be easily obtained by using city tabards and doing Argent Tournament dailies.

Part 1.1 - Alliance factions/mounts for each faction:
    Darnassus (7), Exodar (6), Stormwind (7), Ironforge (6), Gnomeregan (7), Gilneas (0) - Grand total of 34 mounts

Part 1.2 - Horde factions/mounts for each faction:
Orgrimmar (7), Darkspear Trolls (6), Thunder Bluff (7), Undercity (7), Silvermoon City (7), Bilgewater Cartel (2) - Grant total of 36 mounts

    Notes:
-Currently, Horde players have two more mounts available than Alliance players do. I have no doubt that it will be evened out more in a future patch, and it is not necessary for the highest mount achievement currently in game.
-The mounts listed above are ONLY from each respective mount vendor. The numbers do not include Argent Tournament mounts, which will be touched on below.

Part 2.0 - Mounts earned from quest rewards and/or dailies: There are several dailies and quests that can reward unique mounts. It's best to do the Argent Tournament quests every day, as there are 14 mounts obtainable from those alone.

    Part 2.1 - Argent Tournament:
The tournament is located in the northeast part of Icecrown. Upon arrival, the first quest you will be able to pick up will be from an NPC named "Mariel Trueheart", who is located in the western part of the tournament. She will direct you to a tent in the eastern half, where you will unlock a daily quest appropriate for your race. There will be three daily quests per day here - do them every day for three days, and you will get enough Aspirant's Seals to move on. You will then need 25 Valiant's Seals, which will take five days to complete. This can be repeated for each Alliance/Horde faction at the tournament, until all are complete.

Aside from these quests, you will unlock quests upon hitting exalted with the Silver Covenant and gaining the title "Crusader" - which you get from being an exalted champion with everyone at the tournament. It is also reccomended you complete the Black Knight chain, which will unlock yet another daily for you called "Threat From Above". -Grant total of 14 mounts

    Part 2.2 - Hyldnir Spoils:
The Hyldnir Spoils is a reward you get from doing dailies provided by Gretta the Arbiter in Storm Peaks. You unlock this daily by going through the Sons of Hodir questline which starts in K3. There is an approximate 1% chance to obtain a White Polar Bear from this bag.

    Part 2.3 - Vashj'ir Questline:
One very unique mount is obtained simply by doing the first few quests in Vashj'ir - the Abyssal Seahorse. This mount can only be used within Vashj'ir, however it provides a 450% swim speed increase.

    Part 3.0 - Achievement Mounts:
Some mounts are obtainable only through certain achievements. They are not soloable, and are granted from the raid (or five man) achievements.

Part 3.1 - Wrath of the Lich King Achievement Mounts:
Even though Wrath is a thing of the past, you are still able to go back and do many of the raid and five man achievements for the mounts. There are a grand total of five mounts you can get by doing this: The Red Proto-Drake from five man achievements, the Rusted and Ironbound Proto-Drakes from 10 and 25 man Ulduar, and the Bloodbathed and Icebound Frostbrood Vanquishers from 10 and 25 man Ice Crown Citadel achievements.

Part 3.2 - Cataclysm Achievement Mounts:
While they currently provide a hearty challenge, these new achievements reward some very unique mounts. The Volcanic Stone Drake is from heroic five man achievements, and the Drake of the East Wind is from raid achievements. Remember, with the recent raid changes in Cataclysm, this can be obtained in either 10 -OR- 25 man!

Part 4.0 - Miscellaneous Reputation Mounts:
Several factions outside of the Horde and Alliance offer nice mount rewards. While they often require high reputation and a large sum of gold, they are a good addition to any mount lover's collection.

Part 4.1 - Sons of Hodir:
The Sons of Hodir offer two mammoth mounts - an Ice Mammoth, and a Grand Ice Mammoth. The Ice Mammoth is 800g if you're exalted, which is a decent deal if you need a few extra mounts for your achievement. The Grand Ice Mammoth, on the other hand, is 8,000 gold with exalted reputation discounts. While ten times the price as it's predecessor, it allows you to carry up to two others on your mount!

    Part 4.2 - Kurenai/Maghar:
Another great source of mounts are the Kurenai for the Alliance, or the Maghar for the horde. Upon reaching exalted status with them, you can buy a total of eight new Talbuk mounts of different colors! The fastest way to gain reputation is by repeatedly turning in Obsidian Warbeads (which is a fairly common drop from ogres in the area).

    Part 4.3 - Cenarion Expedition:
For exalted reputation with the Cenarion Expedition and a small fee of 2,000 gold, you can own your very own Cenarion War Hippogryph! If you aren't exalted yet, finish up any leftover quests in Zangarmarsh until you hit honored reputation with the druids. After that, you can buy the key which unlocks the heroic mode dungeons in the area, and run heroic Steamvaults. Keep running through it (while keeping any Coilfang Armaments you loot, which can be turned in for a repeatable quest) until you hit exalted.

    Part 4.4 - Ramkahen:
Exalted status with Ramkahen rewards you with two camel mounts - a brown one, and a tan one. The fastest way to hit exalted with these inhabitants of Uldum is simply by wearing their tabard through level 85 dungeons!

    Part 4.5 - Netherwing:
Reputation with the Netherwing can be started as soon as you pick up 280% flying skill. The quest chain is started by an NPC named Mordenai, a blood elf wandering around Netherwing Fields in south eastern Shadowmoon Valley. Simply continue through his chain, and you'll eventually unlock dailies. Do these (while collecting any Netherwing eggs) to hit exalted. Once that happens, whammo! A whopping six Netherwing mounts!

    Part 4.6 - Sha'tari Skyguard:
Another group you'll be getting reputation with in Outland, the Sha'tari Skyguard quest line can be started right next to the Flight Master in Shattrath City. After doing a few small quests, dailies will unlock. Do these until you reach exalted, and you get five unique Nether Ray mounts!

    Part 4.7 - The Oracles:
One of two reputations you can gain in Sholazar Basin, upon reaching exalted with the Oracles you can buy an item called the Mysterious Egg. The egg previously took seven days to hatch with a 4% chance to yield a Green Proto-Drake, however it now only takes three days to hatch, with an increased chance at the mount. Definitely worth trying for.

    Part 4.8 - Wyrmrest Accord:
Led by Alexstrasza the Lifebinder, this conglomeration of different dragons reside in Wyrmrest Temple in Dragonblight. Upon reaching exalted with them, you can buy a Red Drake for 2,000 gold from their quartermaster.

    Part 4.9 - Winterspring Frostsaber/Venomhide Ravasaur:
The Alliance-only Winterspring Frostsaber requires reputation with the Wintersaber Trainers. You can get repeatable quests for their reputation in Northern Winterspring. The Horde-only counterpart, the Venomhide Ravasaur, does not actually require reputation of any sort to obtain. Instead, you must spend a minimum of 20 days raising your own baby ravasaur. The quests start in south eastern Un'Goro Crater from a troll NPC named Mor'vek.

    Part 5.0 - Drop Mounts:
A large number of mounts also drop off of various creatures scattered throughout Azeroth. Some are in instanced zones, while others roam around the outside world.

    Part 5.1 - Pre-BC Drop Mounts:
-Rivendare's Deathcharger: A drop from Lord Aurius Rivendare, approximately 1% drop rate.
-Qiraji Battle Mounts: Four in total available (blue, green, red, yellow). Drop off of trash in Ahn'Qiraj 40 man. The trash can be solo'd, and you can get all four mounts if you zone in, clear up to the first boss and then reset the instance.

Part 5.2 - Burning Crusade Drop Mounts:
Several mounts were obtained through killing instanced bosses in Burning Crusade, and they are as follows...
-Swift White Hawkstrider: Drop from Kael'thas Sunstrider in heroic Magister's Terrace. The drop rate is somewhere between 3%-5%, and is likely easily soloable at 85.
-Raven Lord: A drop off of Anzu in heroic Sethekk Halls. This boss used to only appear when summoned by a druid, however he is now there at all times in heroic Sethekk Halls. Drop rate estimated somewhere around 2%.
-Fiery Warhorse: Drop from Attumen the Huntsman in Karazhan. Drop rate is estimated around 1%. Soloable at 85.
-Ashes of Al'ar: Phoenix mount, a drop from Kael'thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep. Drop rate around 2%, bring around 4 friends at the very least.

Part 5.3 - Wrath of the Lich King Drop Mounts:
-Blue Drake: Drop off of Malygos 10 man
-Azure Drake: Drop off of Malygos 25 man
-Blue Proto-Drake: Drop off of Skadi the Ruthless in heroic Utgarde Pinnacle. 1% drop rate. Can be solo'd with relative ease by a level 85 plate-wearing class.
-Bronze Drake: Drop off of the Infinite Corruptor in heroic Culling of Stratholme - must reach within 25 minutes of starting the dungeon.
-Black Drake: Drop from Sartharion in 10 man if he is engaged and defeated with all three mini-bosses up.
-Twilight Drake: Drop from Sartharion 25 man if he is engaged and defeated with all three mini-bosses up.
-Mimiron's Head: Now a 1% chance to drop upon defeating Yogg-Saron in either 10 or 25 man.
-Time-Lost Proto-Drake: 100% drop chance off of a rare spawn mob by the same name in Storm Peaks.
-Onyxian Drake: Drop off of either Onyxia 10 or 25 man. Drop rate is likely 1% or possibly even lower.
-Grand Black War Mammoth: Three person mount that has a 1% drop chance off of any of the bosses in Vault of Archavon. Apparently can also drop off of the bosses in the new Tol Barad raid.
-Invincible: Now a low drop chance off of Heroic 25 Lich King. Likely around 1% drop rate.

Part 5.4 - Cataclysm Drop Mounts:
-Drake of the North Wind: Has a 1% chance to drop off of Altairus in the Vortex Pinnacle. Can drop in both normal and heroic.
-Vitreous Stone Drake: Has a 1% chance to drop off of Slabhide in the Stonecore. Can drop in both normal and heroic.
-Phosphorescent Stone Drake: A guarunteed drop off of a rare spawn in Deepholme. The rare spawn's name is Aeonaxx, and flies in air around the Temple of Earth.
-Drake of the South Wind: A 1%-2% drop chance off of Al'Akir, the final raid boss in Throne of the Four Winds. Can drop in 10, 25, normal, or heroic.
-Grey Riding Camel: Obtained by finding rare spawn "Mysterious Camel Figurines" across Uldum. There is a chance when using the figurine that you will get teleported to a rare spawn camel with a guarunteed chance to drop the mount.

    Part 6.0 - PVP Mounts:
There are also quite a few mounts that can be obtained through PVP. Some only require a certain amount of honor points, and others require a high rating in rated battlegrounds/arena.

    Part 6.1 - Stormwind/Orgrimmar Mount Vendor:
Five mounts are available from one of the PVP vendors in Stormwind/Orgrimmar. Each one costs 2,000 honor points.

Part 6.2 - Alterac Valley Mounts:
One mount is available through Alterac Valley, a Stormpike Battle Charger (ram) for the Alliance, and a Frostwolf Howler (wolf) for the Horde. These also cost 2,000 honor points each.

    Part 6.3 - Halaa Mounts:
Halaa is is a town that the Alliance and Horde fight for control over in Nagrand. Two more Talbuk mounts are available here. The Dark Riding Talbuk costs 70 Halaa Battle Tokens and 15 Halaa Research Tokens, and the Dark War Talbuk costs 100 Halaa Battle Tokens and 20 Halaa Research Tokens.

Part 6.4 - Tol Barad Mounts:
Tol Barad also has two unique new mounts. A Spectral Steed/Spectral Wolf (steed for Alliance, wolf for Horde) that costs 165 Tol Barad Commendations, and a Drake of the West Wind that costs 200.

    Part 6.5 - Wintergrasp Mounts:
Wintergrasp offers a Black War Mammoth mount. It holds only one person, and can be purchased for 2,000 honor points if you currently control wintergrasp.

    Part 6.6 - Gladiator/Grand Marshal Mounts:
If you are in one of the top Arena/Rated Battleground teams in your battlegroup, you will be awarded with a very nice new mount. High rated arena teams will be awarded a new flying mount, which also grants 310% flying speed if you do not already have it. Rated Battleground teams will be awarded with a unique ground mount. The new mounts that people will be awarded with this season have not yet been announced.

    Part 7.0 - Profession Mounts:
Last, but certainly not least, you can get quite a few mounts from professions. They are all very unique - some require you to have a high enough skill in a profession in order to learn and use it, and others can be used by anyone.
Important Note: Mounts that require skill to learn and use are kept if you drop the profession. They will still count towards your mount achievement and stay in your mount tab, however you will be unable to use the mount.

    Part 7.1 - Engineering:
-Mechanohog/Mekgineer's Chopper: A very nice looking motorcycle mount. The horde get the Mechanohog, and the alliance get the Mekgineer's Chopper. They do not require any engineering skill to learn or use, however cost a minimum of 14,000 gold.
-Flying Machine: This flying mount requires an engineering skill of 300 to learn and use.
-Turbo-Charged Flying Machine: Requires an engineering skill of 375 to learn and use.

    Part 7.2 - Tailoring:
-Flying Carpet: Requires a tailoring skill of 300 to learn and use.
-Magnificent Flying Carpet: Requires a tailoring skill of 425 to learn and use.
-Frosty Flying Carpet: Requires a tailoring skill of 425 to learn and use.

    Part 7.3 - Alchemy:
-Sandstone Drake: This one actually transforms you into a drake. It is crafted by high-level Alchemists, however requires no skill to learn and use.

    Part 7.4 - Fishing:
-Sea Turtle: This little guy can be fished out of any fishing pool in Northrend. You have about a 1/1000 chance to fish him up. He will provide a 60% speed increase while swimming, and no speed increase on land.

    Part 7.5 - Archaeology:
-Fossilized Raptor: This skeletal mount can be assembled by finishing fossil archaeology finds. It's kind of random, so keep at it until you make one!
-Ultramarine Qiraji Battle Tank: This Ahn'Qiraj-looking mount can be found from Tol'Vir archaeological finds. Also somewhat random and rare, so keep at it until you make one!

As you can see, there are more mounts than any one person can handle! Farming mounts is a good way to spend your free time while waiting for your raid to start up, and is an addicting, yet rewarding, way to spend your game time. Grab a Mountain Dew, get your mount checklist out, and happy hunting!

Nice list of the mounts. If you want to keep it updated it would be nice if you made link to either mmo's database so we can see links without going to wowhead etc but just mouse over it.
And about the Sea Turtle. It can currently be fished up by both Northrend and Cataclysm schools but the achievement still displays only Northrend.

You missed a few, but definitely a nice guide! =D

Interesting, I was unaware of that. Thanks! I'll give it an update in a little bit.

Hmm... it appears I did. This wasn't necessarily supposed to be a mount with every single mount ever listed on it. Although, it did almost end up being so. I'll throw that in, too.

err, rather, it wasn't meant to be a LIST with every mount... also, i have forgotten that you cannot edit posts - so if anyone would like to add a mount or two that i might have forgotten to add to the list, please feel free to just post it in the comments!

At exalted it's actually 1,800 if what I remember is correct.

"-Mimiron's Head: Now a 1% chance to drop upon defeating Yogg-Saron in either 10 or 25 man."

    Are you sure about this?
Isn't it only Yogg +0 in 25 man?

  11. #11
You could throw the world event bosses in there in a subsection, too. That is, the two Brewfest mounts, the Headless Horseman's mount, the Love Rocket, and of course the meta achievement one - Violet Proto Drake.
Maybe also purchasable mounts? Celestial Steed and the RaF one, at least.

I know it used to be guarunteed from yogg +0 25, I had thought I had read that it is now just a very low drop chance when defeating yogg, doesn't have to be +0. That was in the mount changes right before cata. Of course, I could be wrong - that's what I remembered reading, though.

incorrect. You get the first one for free. But if you fly back to netherwing ledge there is a vendor who will sell you all the others.

From Warcraft Mounts site: Very low drop change from the 25-man version of Yogg-Saron if you have no Keepers assisting you. Grants the achivement "And I'll Form the Head!"

You're welcome! I plan on reposting after a few content patches, I'll remake a guide to include the ones I left out and add in new ones that I'm sure are to come.

Might also want to add the sandstone drake needs a 450 or higher archaeologist to get the pattern from Tol'Vir relics to craft it
A hero of war, yeah that's what I'll be. And when I come home, they'll be damn proud of me
