Winry's Archaeology Guide

General
Archaeology is a secondary profession released in Cataclysm, most of the rewards are cutsie stuff like toys, mounts, and pets.
Dwarves get bonuses in this profession that give them a chance to get extra fragments, and a shorter cast time on survey (1 second down to .5 seconds, the cooldown on survey remains the same)
Be prepared to spend 200+ hours if you want Professor

Surveying
Digging to see where the fragment in a digsite is.
One fragment location is up at a time in a digsite, so you have to get the first one before you can see where the second one is.
Switching digsites / leaving zones changes where that fragment is if you're having a hard time locating it.

If you survey and get a red tripod, it points towards any part of the yellow 'circle' in which a yellow tripod can be found. Cold
The yellow tripod points towards the green 'circle' in which a green tripod can be found. Getting warmer
The green tripod points pretty much directly towards the artifact. Burning up

Dig Sites
There are 4 Dig Sites up per continent at any given time, and there are 3 digs per site, once you find the 3 digs at each site, a new Dig Site pops up for that continent.

Keystones
There is a chance to get a keystone while digging at a site.
These keystones count as 12 fragments to make an artifact, or can be used while in cataclysm heroic dungeons as a daily quest to give group wide buffs for that heroic lockout

Leveling
To just level archaeology to 525
1-100 gather fragments from digsites
100-525 create Artifacts from collected fragments (5 points each)
The higher level archaeology you are, the more fragments you can get per dig.

85 Gear
Most people who have rushed archaeology at the start of the expansion are going for 85 epics
Tyrande's Favorite Doll - Night Elf
Zin'rokh, Destroyer of Worlds - Troll
Staff of Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan - Dwarf
Ring of the Boy Emperor - Tol'vir
Scimitar of the Sirocco - Tol'vir
Staff of Ammunae - Tol'vir

Saving to get these (since you can't get them until 450)
Save up all fragments of said race until 450 then use them to finish
Reminder: the 85 epics are the lowest chance (around 2%) to get, so most people have spent 200+ hours on this profession trying to get them.

Archaeology Fragments Distribution

Simca posted a very useful thread on the Professions forum compiling data from Archaeology's dig sites to find out which continents are the best to farm fragments of a specific race.
Boubouille compiled the results in a nice table, original data is mostly from Wowpedia's list of Dig Sites (and a lot of work in-game to make sure it works as intended).
