If you want to play something newer that's competitive, go with Call of Duty 4 or Team Fortress 2.

If you want to play something older, and extremely hardcore, go with Quake, Unreal Tournament, or CS 1.6.

    Team Fortress 2, by far.

counterstrike was a great computer FPS

but nothing compares to Halo if you get an xbox360. by far the best FPS.
Call of duty is decent but its a campfest and not very skill-oriented like halo. Halo you have to actually aim, cod you can basically spray your weapon around for kills

Halo? A skill game? Bwahahaha!!! I mean seriously, you can't say a games that need skill when you have auto aim, and is endless spray itself.

As I said, CounterStrike Source. Competitive, will more than likely run on your computer, being good takes some actual skill and can be worked on, and cheap. Oh and when you get bored, you can play Prison Break on it, Surf on it, Death Run on it, Gun Game on it, Minigames on it, Zombie Mod on it, Zombie Escape on it, heck there's a lot of custom servers. You just need the map for them (and it'll download it in game for you).

If you don't want a competivite game, Team Fortress 2. Lots of custom servers on that (but not as many or as polished as CSS) and it's funny as hell. Testament to how awesome it is, Bibi loves it.
