    To quit WoW forever:

    1) Download hacks and get banned
    2) Delete all characters
    3) Set parental controls to 7 days a week
    4) Cancel Battle.net
    5) Uninstall WoW
    6) Burn your game discs+game key
    7) Enjoy Life

To take a nice long break:

    1) Just uninstall WoW, its way to much of a headache to install it again unless you REALLY REALLY want to.

if you get to hooked on playing WoW, then you will get to hooked playing any other game, so best solution is to give your computer away, delete all credit cards, move to a place with no internett or electricity and go there without food so you need to hunt for that.

and have a happy time in the wilderness

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Very Helpful.

And to the trolls: All of last semester I was neglecting homework and not studying just so I could play WoW. I wasn't even doing anything good, just standing in Stormwind or Dalaran. I was addicted. Now a new semester has just started and I want to do better than i did last semester. I have the potential to do extremely good in school, not just Okay.

And I come to a WoW forum because people here know what I am talking about when it comes to the game. I don't hate WoW, its just too addicting. I also have Starcraft 2 and Halo: Reach to play when I have some time.

I got a very good tip on how to quit wow. It isnt easy to do but it will make u not want to play for at least a week or two. It will not work for everyone but worked for me. After a few weeks you want to play again though so better be ready to tell urself not to.

Play for 24hours without sleep. Thats it. You WILL get Very tired and have a headache. You will feel like shit for the next few days but it will take ur mind off wow 100%

    try it

I know where you're coming from and you've already done yourself good by realizing the severity of the issue. My best advice is to do what you can to just stay away from the computer for at least a week or two so that you can deal with the initial mental withdrawals that you'll be experiencing. After that it gets easier.

Obviously you'll want to freeze your account and uninstall the game to make it that much more inconvenient to come back right away.

    Cancel your subscription.
    Delete WoW.
    Have some self-control.

It's a video game, not a highly addictive narcotic.

Edit: If you really have problems quitting something like WoW, you could give your account to someone you can trust (parents for example) who will change the password (because you asked them too, don't worry) to something you wont know. Tell them not to tell you the password until [whatever date] and you're done.

If you end up begging your parents to give you the password, etc etc, or you call blizz pretending you got hacked, consider therapy. Seriously, if you're that hooked on something like WoW, you really do need help from a professional. Not joking, not trying to be cool/edgy, you really should seek assistance.

Just... like... stop paying. But if you don't have one, get yourself an authenticator first. Got a couple friends that quit for about 3 months before Cata, came back and found their accounts had been hacked.

I agree with stop playing but no need to stop coming to sites. I can't speak for OP, but my forum addiction is a seperate beast from my mmo addiction :P

I still post on UO stratics boards, I haven't played retail UO since '02

Quitting cold turkey is hard for many reasons. For one it sounds like you are enjoying yourself right now, you just feel like you should take a break because you are playing too much. That is completely understandable. Something else you will find is a lot of games, especially console games, don't have the depth of a game like WoW, and you grab a game like Red Dead Redemption for $60, play it for a few weeks, and then you need a new game at another $60. I found myself fairly unsatisfied with most console games, or even other PC games for that matter, and ended up coming back to WoW, which is not a bad thing. Each time I took a break and came back, my life priorities were better. I didn't invest as much time or emotion into the game, but I still got just as much if not more fun out of it, and I enjoyed the friends I had made in the game even more.

This is what being a gamer is. This is what having a hobby is. Playing games is a hobby, not an addiction to a substance. How enthralled you are with your hobby can vary, but that is true for lots of things. "Everything is good in moderation." is a very applicable saying.

From the sounds of it you are younger, possibly high school or early college, without a job (not harping on you I promise). I would suggest you find something you need monetarily, like a new car, computer upgrades, sports equipment, electronics, something that you want and don't have enough money for. Most importantly pick something that you have been putting off because you can't afford it. This will require you to do little side jobs, or get a part time job. This may be 5 hours a week, or it may be 20+, but what it will allow you to do is not only afford this thing you have always wanted, but it will put a hard time constraint on the amount you could play WoW in a day. Playing less may be all you need to feel better, and many aspects of your life improve. When I started WoW in between high school and college I could play upwards of 15 hours a day if I wanted, and my life in general suffered. When I got a job or had classes, I simply could not play as much by default, and by doing that my play was more efficient because it had to be, but it was also for shorter periods. When you simply can't play much because of other constraints, you will either play with more "vigor" or "efficiency" when you can, or realize that a lot of the time you are playing is just waiting around in a city or other unimportant stuff.

Also, if you do quit, perusing things like MMOChampion and whatnot sort of relieves the intense "yearning" you may have to still play.

Like many people are saying, find a hobby, or get back into an old one. Play a sport you like. Hell, play a different game that you don't have to devote as much time to.

You may come back to WoW, you may not, but I guarantee if you do you will come back with a different understanding of the game, it's importance, and what playing a game really means.

You can be addicted to anything in the world. You can also break the addiction to that anything.

I managed to quit WoW for around half a year by just not paying. I was still reading mmo-ch for TG and DL comic and to check patch notes to discuss all the changes with IRL friends.

Give your account info to someone you trust who doesn't play the game, perhaps even a parent. Tell them to change your password and keep track of what it is. Then the ball is in their court, not yours.

The only way I have ever seen people completely quit is to go through and DELETE every character on their account before going to the site and canceling their subscription. You are gonna be tempted to keep coming back otherwise. With all the characters gone you start thinking about how much of a bitch it will be to spend X amount of time leveling to do 85 stuff then another X amount of time gearing in order to do the "fun" stuff.

You fail sir. I played for 30 hours till I hit 85 at release. Slept for 8 then went right back to my regular playing schedule.

Strange? You MANAGED? Honestly this is getting out of hand. Why do people think it's so difficult? Honestly snap out of the idea that VIDEO GAMES ARE ADDICTIVE.

I have some news. I think it is time for me to take a break from WoW, at least until this school year is done (which is in the end of May).
I know this will be hard, but I think I will do it. I will stop browsing everything WoW-Related (i.e. MMO-Champ and wow insider). Any other things that might help me be able to stay off wow?

Also, are there any things I should do in-game before I quit (take a break)? I want to be able to return eventually. I was thinking about setting all my characters in cities and leaving them.

    Thanks for the Help guys.

Truth be told what did it for me was deleting all my characters stuff. All of it. It was hard to do getting rid of all those epics, but I did it because I knew that if I did I would be so pissed for losing all that hard earned gear I'd just stop playing. Worked.

    Then cataclsym came out.

Just because it may not be addicting to you, doesn't mean it's the same for everyone else. Alcohol, cigarettes, porn, gambling, and caffeine are not addicting to me. They are very addictive to some people though.
