There are alot of setting, spend some time playing with them to get it how you like.
Talk to some other people to see what raid debuffs they've found adding to grid made things easier for them, for example not something that can be dispelled but needs a prio because maybe heal spam needed on target or something.
Take a look at the addons that have been made for grid as some of them you may find just as vauleable as grid it's self.
