I agree. Raid 1 or 5 is more appropriate for storage. Redundancy > speed for storage.

I'm tempted to get 1 for my macbook pro and fit the original 500gb hdd into the superdrive bay. Still the prices for anything above 128gb is painful
Yeah the prices are steep, the next generation is supposed to be a decent bit cheaper however than the current generation. So I'm waiting for them to show up before I make any decisions.

Before I got the SSD, it was my system drive. I just installed Windows on the SSD when I got it, and put the RAID as a secondary drive. Was able to reset permissions on everything and copy all my stuff over. Now I have a very fast SSD for OS and WoW, and a pretty damn fast RAID drive for every other game.

I disagree completely. PS, AE, and Maya are all HUGE size hogs, and like the op said, space isnt something that comes cheap with SSD's. With editing programs you would have to put the files you are working on/saving on a backup drive, which would make the SSD speed useless.

I would, and do have my OS and games on my SSD. Games that you care about with speed. Obviously you wouldnt put Plants vs Zombies on it, but FPS, mmo's etc are badass on them.

One thing that ive noticed, is if I dip below 30% free space it seems to slow down a bit. Not a huge amt, but noticible, which is crappy, since size is such a factor... who knows.

I only had $80 to spend on a Kingston SSD Now 64gb SSD, so I only use it for my OS and office. Games, music, large apps and images go on my TB drive until I can afford a larger ssd.

SSD = best upgrade I've ever purchased for any system. Around 15 seconds from cold boot to a usable Windows desktop (most of which is POST time, heh), and just about every program launches instantly. Watching Photoshop CS5 launch in a shade over one second makes me weep with joy.

I have a 256 GB Crucial RealSSD for OS, apps and games. I recently dumped my 1 TB HDD and bought a 512 GB SSD for data storage. SSDs are indeed quite expensive per-gigabyte compared to larger-capacity mechanical drives, but their speed, silence, and ability to tuck them behind the motherboard tray due to size and not requiring active cooling outweigh the loss in storage capacity to me.

I would recommend to put your OS and some games you frequently play on the SSD

    WIndows 7
    World of Warcraft
    Photoshop CS5
Media Composer 5, thats pretty much it

    Total 90gb~ /128gb

All my data is kept on a RAID NAS which is redundant storage. My machine with the RAID0 10kRPM drives in it is just a gaming machine. When I say "storage" for it, I mean other games (most of the drives space tbh).

128GB SSD with 6Gb/s interface. I built my PC for fast read/write. So my mobo/HDD/SSD are all 6Gb/s.

I keep Win7 64, WOW, Spore, SC2 on my drive along with all my programs. There is no media on it what so ever. All my movies/pictures/porn are saved on my HDD's.

Hitting Restart in windows. I'm back to my desktop in about 15-20 seconds. I love it.

I put Win7 and WoW on it to see if it made much of a difference to my old setup of Win7 on my WDCB and WoW on the SSD. So far... not much difference.

Why would you put Photoshop CS5... a 64bit program that can address loads of memory... on an SSD.

Once it's open all your speed will be based around where your source is, how fast your memory is, and if the program has to scratch history.

If he has nothing else to put on there, it'll make no difference. Drive isn't full, might as well put programs on there that he uses a lot =P

Well...MMORPGS are one of the few games that are worth placing on a SSD. Because they load stuff constantly (in which a normal HDD can't always keep up with). Regular games (FPS for example) only benefit from an SSD by reducing load screens....but that's hardly worth filling your SSD for

So, if your SSD has a decent size (120gb is good), you should certainly put WoW on it...and maybe another MMO if you play multiple MMO's.

currently im running with 500GB main SSD and a 80gb one just for windows. i put all my major programs: wow, vent, steam games, adobe CS5, maya, 3dsmax, cinima 4d, zbrush on there and most media on standard 1 TB drive. if the file is relatively large i will move it over to the 500gb SSD and they move it back when im done. so far im seeing a HUGE increase in the speed of my programs minus a couple of issues (maya seems to have problems loading there open/save menus on a SSD, has like a 10 second load time jsut to open the window) but otherwise everything is blazing fast.

Just my OS (Windows 7), and WoW. Love them fast load times. I use an 80GB Intel X-25m SSD, and I still have approx. 30GB to spare. Plenty of space for what I need.

80 GB Intel 34 nm, the 2nd Generation [74GB Formated ] , STEAM + DC Universe Online. And since my steam is 50 GB and DCUO is 12 I left the rest free. I had my OS on it, is not bad, however the only notable preformance gain was the boot up. And I usually power up my PC and walk away to fetch Coke / someting ... therefore it became unnecessairy. And the STEAM games on it really load faster, therefore the gain from moving games to the SSD instead of OS was bigger, since I boot once a day / few days but I play games more often.

    I have my
    Windows7
    Wow
    Any browser
    Any media-player
Any major program, even downloading programs. (but with download-directory on my 1TB and 2TB-discs)

I have 20.5 GB to spare on my 60GB SSD with that.

Hm, do you feel the web browser has a pretty noticeable gain on the SSD?

I only have my Laptop to compare to, and the browsers are faster on my desktop, at least. Besides, chrome doesn't take a lot of room and is already quite fast. But even FFox is fast on the SSD.
