Hi.
I just wanted to add my perspective to the Cataclysm expansion and how it has ruined a lot of things for me. About 2 years ago I got my current job as a personal assistant to a mentally handicapped person, let's call him Sid. Sid has the body of a man in his late 20's, but his mind is somewhere around a 5 year old. Sid has always been more or less obsessed by the Warcraft universe, and one aspect that made me get the job in the first place was our common interest in online gaming, and in particular, WoW. His mom wanted someone to not only be a "guard" for her son, but also a friend. It didn't take long for me and Sid to become buddies, when we didn't play WoW together we'd do other stuff, but our gaming sessions were fun most of the time. Eventually Sid's mom even bought a computer for me too to play on so I didn't have to use my personal laptop at work.
On a normal day we'd play two hours every day, one hour in the morning, and one hour after lunch. I must admit we'd sometimes break the rules and play an extra half hour. During WOTLK everything was fine, me playing tank and Sid on his hunter. Back then we'd usually have time to do at least two dungeons everyday. The hunter class fit Sid; he had a fun pet by his side, and with volley he could do some real nice damage. Hell, sometimes he even topped the meter on trash packs. We had both pretty nice gear, both decked in T10 at the end of the x-pack. We even did the weekly raid quests, which Sid liked a lot (9 other people, all shooting stuff at the bad guys! = wow!). A few times Sid's mom let us play for a few hours during weekend nights, then we'd go to ICC and do up to Saurfang in a pug raid.
Then Cata came. Volley disappeared and the game took another turn. Sid became very sad.
We levelled pretty slowly since we had limited game time, and most of those XP were earned in dungeons since Sid sometimes had a hard time understanding quests as well as navigating in a large zone, not only on the ground, but in the air as well. During this time Sid got more and more frustrated. Sid has a tendency to get frustrated when things don't go his way. That means for example when I tried to teach him how to trap things. Even in some normal dungeons people were demanding CC, and that is something he just couldn't pull off.
He doesn't read very well but he has learned the words "retard", "lol 3k dps hunter" and that "ffs" isn't very nice things to say. He has also learned that he can be vote kicked out of the dungeon any second. Like the other night for example. We had just zoned in to our first heroic cata dungeon ever, I had spent most of my gold from levelling on some crafted pieces and AH blues to boost our iLvLs. Sid got kicked out after about 30 seconds with the reason "lol ghetto gear". I also had "ghetto gear" but I guess a tank is valued higher.
Sid went rampage. I had only seen him doing that one time before during our 2 years together, and that was when his cat was hit by a car. He threw his monitor in the floor, and went crazy. When he had calmed down he told me he'd quit WoW. Last night I had a talk with his mom, my employer, and she partly blames me for Sid's behaviour. She's strongly considering replacing me with someone who can "deal with Sid's emotions".
I'm gutted. She doesn't understand WoW at all, or the sudden new elitistic difficulty level, instead she blames me and think I'm the reason to Sid's rage.
I hope you got what you wanted: a hard game. Me, I'm about to lose my job.
Thanks for listening, and remember this game should be for everyone, not only elitistic gamers. And Blizzard if you're reading this: WOTLK heroics were perfectly tuned, please bring the old style back.
