The Shining is the only movie that I can say has truly scared me. Great movie, but I can only watch it once, maybe twice a year.

Also, Paranormal Activity wasn't a horror movie, it was obviously a comedy. I was laughing my ass off through the whole thing.

    Alice Cooper is greatness.

Also, you can watch Tetsuo on youtube (apparently). I suggest you watch the first bit or so to see if it's any good (again, probs not your style, fairly old, ect.).

Just a few I can list of the top of my head:

Saw - A man puts people in elaborate traps. The first movie is really good, the second one is OK, the rest are increasingly meh. But do see the first part.
Hellraiser - By opening a complicated puzzle box demons are summoned. Again, the first two parts are the best, although part 7 is a pleasent surprise.
In The Mouth Of Madness - a man specializing in discovering frauds goes on a search for a horror writer, who dissapeared. Can scare the bejesus out of you without really using absurd monsters and gore. Has Sam Neill in it.
Event Horizon - a space ship using a prototype drive type dissapeares during the test and reappeares a few years later. Another space ship is sent to investigate. Also has Sam Neill.
Pandorum - Two crew mwmbers wake up on a space ship. They find no traces of other people, and then find out they are not alone.
Martyrs - a French film about a girl who seeks revenge against the people who tormented her as a child. Quite gory and disturbing, but also really good.
Inside (À l'intérieur) - another Franch film, about a pregnant woman who, on the day before delivery, is visited by a mysterious woman who wants to take her child. Really good if you can stand the high gore factor.
Frontier(s) (Frontière(s)) - yet another one from France. A group of young people fleeing from riots in Paris stop at an inn run by a family of cannibal Nazis. The premise sounds goofy, but the movie is not.
House of 1000 Corpses - Rob Zombie's tribute to the horror genere. Sometimes a bit silly, sometimes over-the-top, but all round satisfying. The sequel, The Devil's Rejects is also good, but very different in tone, almost not a horror movie.
Machinist - about a man with insomnia slowly losing his mind. If nothing else, see it to witness how dedicated to the role Chrisian Bale was - he lost 28 kilograms (62 lb).
Ringu (the Japaneese original) and Ring (the American remake) - people die after watching a certain videotape. The two versions differ in tone, but both are good.

If we are going to mention french films can't go past High Tension (Haute Tension) a great nasty ass slasher film that certainly pulls no punches but has divided people over the mind fuck of an ending
A Serbian Film - possibly the most hardcore film ever with skull fucking, "newborn porn" and forced incest among other things and like texas chainsaw massacre makes you think you've seen more graphic things then you've actually seen on camera
Cannibal Holocaust - one of the old classic video nasties that was banned in a lot of places and had the director in court to prove he didnt really kill the actors in it.
Audition - Takeshi Miike is a genius and this is possibly his best film it starts out like a romantic comedy before one of the most difficult endings ever
Let the right one in - recently remade in english as "Let Me In" which is a fine film that is about an 8/10 yet pales in comparison to the original swedish version which is simply a piece of art. watch the pool scene at the end and tell me thats not art

High Tension just didn't make sense, not that it was a "mind fuck" it just well didn't make sense at all. It was entertaining as a pure slasher flick up to a point but the "twist" in the end felt like it was thrown in.

The Descent was entertaining while they were spelunking (cave crawling/exploring) there was some genuine nerve wracking scenes when they're going through the small crevasses. But when they add the small asian looking underground guys I started laughing and never stopped.

Event Horizon - Awesome, one of those underrated gems nobody heard about. Remember watching it with gf at the time when it came out she was scared shitless.

Probably the best though and one that made people puke in the theaters, Seven. I remember sitting there and when it got to the part with the obese dude I just hear this BLLLELLEEHHBPPP and this guy up behind me to the left sprays the people in front of him, and they all started puking it was chain reaction vomit. Afterwards the place stank, an employee came in and started cleaning and every so often you hear him dry heave from the smell, and other people left. Nothing like watching Seven with the stale smell of vomit wafting around the room.

If you watch high tension again the ending makes more sense but if you still think it sucks then just enjoy the gore

Well they never explain the whole rape van and burly guy who at one point is using a severed head to pleasure himself. Amongst other things. Its like half way through they decided to make a twist to the movie and disregard the first half.

Slightly old thread but I've recently seen/rewatched some. I don't really watch a *ton* of horror movies but I try to watch ones I think might be good and fit my tastes. Slashers are stupid as hell IMO (Scream movies for example), particularly because they are much more about gore and stupid people then anything else. I prefer the supernatural type I guess.

The Ring Movies are probably the scariest ones I've seen, because they are creepy in several different ways and IMO the acting and plot are great. Both of them are actually equally well-made, *IMO* and the most unrealistic thing is probably the usage of VHS tapes

The original Alien was really good, the best sci-fi/monster horror flick I've seen by miles.

The Thing was a good movie, but I can't say a single part of it was horrifying...is it really horror? It's more of a monster movie IMO, it's about as horrifying as Jaws....it might be horrifying if you are the person dying but if you are not, its more like 'well...that sucks'.

Dark Water was terrible. Could have done something with the mood and setting to make it a great movie but....terrible. Stupid, bad ending.

White Noise One and Two...just saw the second, and its not all that better than the first like most people say...both have dumb endings, but some of the scenes are pretty damn freaky...I actually thought the first was more unsettling.

The Grudge was okay...predictable as they come but the monsters were creepy and make funky noises.

Paranormal Activity was okay....could have been better if the characters were smarter and you didn't actually cheer for the ghost after 20 minutes or so. Example, discovering the fact that it can move objects 15 minutes in the film (like a nice sharp pointy knife to stab you with so you might not want to piss it off maybe?) and finding it only mildly unsettling but finding a harmless picture of yourself in the attic much later in the movie and freaking out over is mind-boggling. Haven't seen the second, if the characters in that one are less dumb I might consider it.

I'm more of a supernatural horror type guy,(propably classic horror as some may define it) i'm actually kinda picky it's really hard for me to find a movie a horror if it doesn't have any supernatural evil in it, id just call it a thriller.

anyway here's a few that i have seen that i thought were ok.

    --Frighteners
    --Drag me to hell
    --Exorcism of emily rose
    --Bram's Stoker's Dracula
    --devil
    --jeepers creepers 2
--Dark night of the scare crow(but that was when i was a kid, i watched it and got the crap scared out of me)

Noroi (The Curse) will shit you up in more ways than you can imagine. DVDs are impossible to come across but there are some decent rips floating about the usual places on the net.
