    Random lag spikes in Dungeons/Raids

Hey guys, im having some problem with my WoW. During raids and dungeons..i'm getting random lag spikes.

Every 5-10seconds I will get a huge spike and my casts will be delayed around 1 second. When im questing, it happens less often, but still happens.

My computer is brand new, this started happening around 2-3 days ago. The only things that are installed on my computer is WoW, Left4Dead, and Counter-Strike. I was also experiencing spikes playing CS.

My comp is a Gateway DX4850-45c:
    Intel Core i7 2600 Quad Core @ 3.4Ghz
    Nvidia Geforce Gt420
    1TB HD
    8GB DDR3 ram

I play on 'Good' settings, with Shadows turned down, 1920x1080 resolution. Can my computer simply not handle Good settings? During our HM Halfus fight last night, I would have spikes throughout the whole fight EXCEPT for when he did furious roars, and rarely any spells were casted.

Please help me find out whats wrong! Thanks in advance.

Edit: I turned settings all the way to Low and I still get the random lag spike

If it was happening to you while playing CS as well, it is just your internet. I get random lag spikes quite often during the day (thankfully not at night) since I am playing on university internet.

Please describe the spikes more in-depth. Is it a big FPS drop? Does your screen freeze completely? Do graphics roll on while nothing happens information-wise? It's really hard to troubleshoot when 'lagspike' is the only description.

Also, make sure your HDD is connected to a safe SATA port, it's possible you've got one of the faulty MoBos, I see you have a SB CPU.

And to answer your question about settings: You should be able to play at ultra with some exceptions on very acceptable frame rates.

So apparently this is happening to almost everyone on certain ISPs, namely, the one I'm on; Cogeco... I'm gonna keep trying proxy servers and hopefully this issue is resolved. A tech specialist from cogeco said that at&t's servers are used by cogeco as backbone servers to reach blizzard data centers and this is where the packet shaping and throttling is happening. What a bad time.

    Thanks for the reply guys.

As for the spikes, it seems it only happens everytime I finish a spellcast.. I just stood in Orgrimmar spamming Scorch for a few minutes, ever so often my cast will be finished, then the screen freezes for .5-1 second, then I'll see the cast animation go off.

I just logged onto my laptop, and did the same thing with spamming spells. Same time of 'spiking' happens. Could it be a addon problem? Im currently using Pitbull, Bartender, and Quartz for addons..

Edit: I live in Calgary, AB, Canada. On Shaw Cable internet.. I'll call them and ask them to check If i have a stable connection. The thing is, my FPS and MS are relatively stable. My MS hovers around 90-150 all the time.

Latency and Framerate are two different things. If you change your graphics settings your latency will not change. Orgrimmar has a lot of client to server interaction so you will always lag there. I'm thinking that there is a little bug in the game that slows you client to server down, I play a mage and I have a similar, but not as bad of an issue.

OMG people that have the same issue I've been having! I use AT&T and this started a few weeks ago. I have deleted and downloaded a new WOW, defraged, deleted AVG, downloaded ESET and ran that, turned all app's off on startup in windows, updated my drivers, turned my graphics to low settings, Tried other much more graphically demanding games (they all run silky smooth), Tested with no addons on, and basically everything else a person can think of. It just wont stop the huge lag spike once every 10-30 seconds or so that always happen at the end of spell casts over and over and over for weeks. Im at my wits end with it.

Yes, but the thing is that this has just happened very recent. two or three days ago. When I used to play on my laptop, I would never get delay in 5-man dungeons, and now I do. So im starting to think its a ISP problem =/ Or possibly something to do with the new patch

I'm thinking its patch as well, especially if you have P2P on for the launcher. On the link above there are plenty of people with latency issues, you may be an unlucky one and share a locale/isp with others having the same issue =/

Well, I just talked to a representative from my ISP and they said everything was fine with my modem, a stable connection. She suggested I check my router, I plugged my internet wire straight to my modem ( didn't use the router ) and same thing happened. So its either something my ISP cant detect or it has to do with the new patch =/ Can't really think of anything else.

Actually it could be very well some addon issue. Do you have the option display LUA errors in your interface options on? Such lag spikes could very well occur when there are too much errors at once. Try to refresh your addons/wai for a stable Quartz version (has some errors right now). With your configuration, you should be never under 60 fps even on ultra settings with 1920x1080.

I don't have that option on, I'll give that a try tomorrow. My pitbull is up to date with 4.0.6, i tried turning off Quartz and I was still feeling the lag, would I have to completely remove it from my addon folder? The thing is, none of my guildies are having any problems like this, who have the same addons as I do

It might be unrelated to OP's lag spikes but that graphics card, the GT 420, is not sufficient for gaming, and WoW on ultra will certainly strain the card. It's a really weird config actually if the rig was advertised for gaming or something similar, because it's basically a top of the line CPU paired with the weakest DX11 GPU on the market.

What is the name of your soundcard ?

this may have no relevance but I had this problem once, where I got lag spikes in dungeons until eventually it would crash, and it was heat spikes on my CPU caused by dried up thermal paste(obviously an old comp). if nothing else seems to work you could check your cpu and video card cooling to make sure all is right with them.

It has to do with AT&T's servers, and whatever routing packets are taking to get to your realm. I sit at 150ms on my realm, but in combat I still get slight packet spikes showing up to 500ms on Quartz. It's the nature of the internet. If it's happening really badly for you though, getting around it would be a problem, since Shaw will go through the same routes and nodes as Telus, or any other ISP in Alberta.

Best bet is to complain to Blizzard.

I have d/c a couple times since the new patch myself. I use Comcast. I havent d/c for months prior to this. I have noticed that when there is a new patch this happens...usually only lasts for a week or less, once it lasted for 3 weeks or so.
