That depends on a lot more than a vague GPU type and RAM amount.

What's the core clock on each? Shader clock? How many stream processors? Memory clock? Is the brand dependable or does it have a high fail rate?
Start comparing those factors and you might draw closer to a more informed decision.

Uther- Our bads are better than your bads.

Nvidia make the processor. not the cards idiot. please dont pick at people if your as thick as a 2x4

    *edit*

ive done some investigation myself into the best option.

generaly speaking both cards support DX11 both are capable of playing 99% of games at playable frame rates

but the 570 processor is better than the 460 in most cases but only fractionaly.
most people compare having 2x460 in SLI about = to the 580, and the 570 is abit below the 580 so, tbh get what u can afford but i personaly am going to buy 2x460's

1 card with high clockspeeds/overlocking generates more heat. i can overclock 2x460 less (protecting the card more) to get the same oomf.

unless your going to play crysis 2 or rift with max graphics a 460 will do all u want easy.

yeah sorry about that, somehow read his post wrong and thought he was asking which brand it was (ati/nvidia etc) it's still morning!

Tbh both are equal in Raw power , that said the GTX 570 run way much cooler than the GTX 480 .On the other hand if you game on a higher resolution than 1920x1080 well then it may be a good idea to pick the 480 because it has more RAM.

But anyway i strongly suggest you to buy a MSI Twin Frozr II GTX 570 .. probably the coolest/less noise High-end GPU out there.

Or get any 570/580 and replace the stock cooler with Accelero Xtreme Plus, cooler and quieter than Twin Frozr II any day.

Why would you want to SLI 480? Rather get single 580.

If I want a SLi then I will have to buy new motherboard since mine doesnt support 2 GPU's :/

If you're running at a resolution that requires SLI GPUs to deliver decent frame rate, you've probably spent enough on a monitor that you can afford to buy two GTX580s and call it a day.

Otherwise, the GTX570 is similar enough to the GTX480 in performance that I'd take the single 570. It runs cooler and uses less power than the GTX480 according to Anandtech.com. Keep in mind that SLI doesn't work in many games (like WoW) and often actually decreases performance due to buggy drivers.
    Super casual.

@OP The GTX 570 is better. Technically speaking, in terms of Nvidia's hiearchy its not the replacement to the GTX480. The GTX580 is, hence the name. As many have said earlier, performance is similar. Since its also part of Nvidia's latest lineup of cards, driver support and performance should get better over time with the 570 compared to the 480.

However I was under the impression that you have a GTX480 already, since you made a post in regards to what PSU you needed for said card.

SLI works perfectly fine with WoW ... Setting everything to Ultra with 4x AA/AF , My both GTX460 sometime peak at 75% in crowded area. And ive recently read a post(somewhere on MMO-Champ) on how to improve WoW graphic ... and holy shit both GPU run at 95%+ when i increase the distance i can see thing(over default max setting)

Can anyone else confirm? All I've heard (last checked about two weeks ago) was that WoW did not work properly with SLI, ending up with the performance of only one card, and I've seen nothing in patch notes to lead me to believe they've improved support for it. If both GPUs are running, I'll bet 10g they're both processing the same information, as in instead of splitting frames to render they're both rendering the same frames redundantly, for no reason.
    Super casual.

The SLI debate is a pretty old one and not only on this forum.

This thread has a blue poster response in it.

In short, you see little to no benefit using an SLI setup since WoW is not a particularly GPU bound game. For those using high resolution display monitors (2560X1440) you may see some performance increase but this is more due to the increase in GFX card memory, than anything related to GPU performance.

Infact even if what you said was true, then the same would be even more true of say a single card GTX580, which does perform better than a GTX460 SLI setup in GPU bound games in general. But this has not been the case. Type GTX580 WoW performance into google and you'll notice that for every post claiming to see an increase in FPS there are more posts reporting the contrary to this.

Here is another interesting report, using GTX 580 SLI setup.
