    Upgrading my PC....Need card advice.

So my BFG card finally keeled over. As some of you may know they went out of business to and are no longer honoring warenties. So i have about 150 bucks to spend on a new card.
After browsing newegg for about an hour I found these....

Im a bit bitter when it comes to Nvidia cards but after some research i found my mobo has something to do with Nvidia.

So I pose a quetion...does it matter? I have my old vanilla card in my PC (radeon x1550) and it works fine to run the game right now.

Iv also decided to update my old 2.6Ghz dual core to...

Input is very needed, I am but a small time nerd.

On the note of upgrading your processor, you can't just drop any processor into any board. The BIOS has to support the processors along with the power capabilities of the board and power supply. Honestly though the 1st generation Phenom X4's are NOT good processors at all. They are slow with a quite inferior architecture/clock speed compared to modern 2nd Generation Phenom's(aka Phenom II's). As stated though, you would need to verify your board is capable of recognizing the Phenom X4 in the bios before buying it or else you'll be left with a Processor you wasted money on.

The 5670 is an alright card, I would definitely consider it over the 4670 being that it is faster and uses about the same amount of power as the 4670 while running cooler and quieter.

I have limited choices seeing as my mobo is old and just an AM2 socket.

I suggest replacing the mobo and CPU as a whole then. Being that the board you have is an OEM one, there's no guarantee that any processor will work other than the one it was shipped with. Since the OEM most likely doesn't update the bios anymore and probably hasn't in a long long time(being its so old) I'm betting it'll have a pretty limited spectrum of CPU Support.

Well i have a budget of 300 dollars what would you suggest? i know i can get second gen phenoms realitively cheap.

Im building off an HP i bought like 2 years back. I was going to buy a whole new PC but seeing as how this is the only money ill have for a while....and RIFT starts today.....[COLOR="red"]

Not sure if this will fit in my case. But the price is good its DDR2 memory compliant(i have like 7 sticks of DDR2 because i like in 2005)
and it as AM3 socket capability.

If you want the best bang for the buck card, here it is:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-058-_-Product
Less than $110 after MIR. Will be enough to max out WoW and run RIFT at pretty high settings.
edit: wow, one of the reviews said they got the card for 60 bucks after MIR from another site... wtf?

    Thanks for the suggestions bro.

Card is just out of my price range i literally have 322 dollars in my back account. Also, id like some input on galaxy in general. Like i said earlier i dont have a direct problem with Nvidia but was leaning to the ATI side this time around.

Dude, the 9800 GTX minimum power requirement is 450 watts and you've already said that you have a 400 watt power supply. Are you even sure the card is dead?

This is what I thought, 400w looks a little low for the power-hungry 9800 GTX. His PSU could've stuffed up the PCI-power connector or something.

The 9800GTX isn't that power hungry compared to other cards like the GTX 260. The standard model alone uses 140 watts while the GTX+ uses 141 watts alone.

Ok? The minimum power requirement from the manufacturer is still 450 watts.

    Hello.
I too have an old AM2 mobo, its an ASUS M2n4sli,and I recently bought a new VGA and its an ATI.(HD5750OC from Gigabyte)
While its sure to support an nvidia chipset, the new card is running without a problem.

First,I recommend an ATI for you because the GTX2xx series from nvidia are farily sh*t.They are the first fermi-based VGAs,and they aren't really strong.
Second, you have to check some things before you buy one.You need to check if your 400W powersupply will be enough, because nowadays VGAs tend to require a LOT OF POWER(Some manufacturers PSUs can dish out more than they are labeled for.).You can do this by just searching around in Google. The other thing is your motherboard. All of todays cards are PCI-E,sure,but there are PCIE 1.0,1.1,2.0 and 2.1 cards. My mobo supports 1.1 and the card I got is 2.1.Its backward comaptible in most cases (90%),but it tends to have problems only with 1.0.
You can check this by looking at your mobo's manual.Usually it will only state that its "pcie 1.0",you can decide if its 1.1 or 1.0 by looking at the xsomething part.If its x8,then its 1.0 and if its x16 then its 1.1.
You have to know that if your card is 2.1 or 2.0 and its in a 1.0 or 1.1 slot,it wont be able to provide its full power.Still,it will be MUCH better/powerful than any 1.0 or 1.1 card you can get.
    So,to summ it up:
#1 check the desired card's powersupply requirement (Google-a-lot)
#2 Check your motherboards pcie slots and what the card requires.
#3 If it requires more than your powersupply can provide, then either try another card or get a new PS too.Its recommended to get a STRONG powersupply.

Those minimum power requirements don't mean shit in real world.

Ok so after reading the replies on this thread(thanks a lot all who contributed) Iv decided my first step in upgrading my PC(by upgrading i mean working with what i have untill i can pocket some extra cash and just build a new one using the parts im buying now and future parts) Im going to buy a new PSU and GFX card. Now i pose another question that some may scoff at.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139019

Is what im looking at right now(my friend who builds Pcs but refuses to give me advice because hes a douche bag) said i should only buy Corsair. Will there be compatibility issues with my current (dated) Mobo?

Thanks a head of time Pc overlords.

    My exact Mobo.

edit: Yes my 9800 is dead. The fan died and over heats 5 mins on a very low load. i found out because it crashed when i let some idiot play farmville on my computer.

Spend an extra $10 on a 650TX, it is better quality than the CX from what I have heard CX is the budget line.
    $79.99 after $10 MIR:
