    Major Earthquake In Japan

    From CNN

A major earthquake in Japan early Friday sent people fleeing out of buildings in the capital of Tokyo and triggered tsunami warnings.
Cars toppled off bridges and fell into waters underneath.
The 7.9-magnitude quake was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.
It triggered a tsunami warning for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.
"Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter," forecasters said.
"An investigation is under way to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii."

    Looks like they're calling it 8.8 now, maybe -- http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak...011/usc0001xgp .

They're also talking about it on the live news streams:

    I hope everyone's alright!

But still, if you live in the dragon's den, you're gonna get scorched. It just comes with the territory. Hopefully, their building standards are well-done and there is no major damage to infrastructure... but with an 8.9... Hmm.

Use Imgur, or your point is invalid because you're clearly an idiot.

That picture looks like the live video I was seeing on one of the live streams I linked, so probably authentic. I also saw video of it running through a village / eating farms; it was terrifying. :/

Keeping everyone in my thoughts, for sure.

watching CNN now (2:09 am EST) and they say tsunamis have hit--water is just gushing into the mainland. Not hollywood tsunamis, but still destructive.

tsunamis hitting the mainland as we speak, the country's that have actual warnings out for them are Russia and Japan, while most of the other Islands in the area are simply on Tsunami watch

8.9 was the major one at 9:46

    There were two major aftershocks:

    7.1 39 mins. afterwards (10:25)
    6.4 20 mins. afterwards (10:06)

All within 130 km of each other.

Might not be the last quake either, given there's been dozens since wednesday.

Luckily for the Japanese, they're one the most advanced nations in term of earth quake architecture.

hope all is well. good thing it's not the middle of the night there. never been in an earthquake but i'd assume things like that would be horrible in the dark.

I'm watching a live feed, and it appears that Japan was already prepared for a massive earthquake coming soon, which is interesting. Really thats all anyone can do, and it seems like theres a surprisingly small amount of damage for such a HUGE quake. Wishing them luck.

The footage of the tsunamis...damn thats some intense stuff...thats where the real damage is gonna come from, the Japanese are so freaking prepared for earthquakes that compared to the water its gonna be inconsequential. Its going to be interesting to see how the international community reacts.
