I just saw the news, can't believe. I saw people in cars that got smashed by water. Nippon banzai! It's hard to say but they were prepared well, 22 deaths (min) atm, but if that was anywhere else it would be much worse ;(

You should be ok. Just stay away from low lying coastal areas, and any waterways that lead to the ocean. We have no way of knowing how big the tsunami can be. It might only be a few inches and you won't even notice. Highly doubtful it'll be any bigger than what will hit Hawaii, and they're only thinking 1-3 meters there.

    Weird stuff

my hopes go out to all the japanese, i really hope they all do okay.
Not to go off topic, and im not saying OMG 2012 BS.. but this year has had an unusual amount of natural distaster happening within just the first 3 months.

Idk if it reached you Americans in the news, but here in Aus we had 3 major floods (over 60 dead), two major bushfires and a category 5( the largest) cyclone, as well as a massive earthquake in NZ( over 80 died), its pretty insane

With the girlfriend being japanese, living closeish to epicentre, not being with her I felt so scared for her. With Japan they know the risk being on 3 plate boundaries but still an 8.8 richter is huge. I do love how most of Nihonjin are so calm about it shame my gf isn't >_< but yeah power was down for a while and with nuclear power being a large part of the power resource its scary to think that an isolation may have gone wrong or something.
Just my little bit on the matter.

I'm wondering how high the death toll in Japan is gonna get as the day goes by. Has anyone seen any kind of death estimates anywhere? I saw one estimate that said they expect the toll to rise to 100, but that seems stupidly low.

I live close-ish to the OR coast, they're talking 3-4 feet of water in certain areas >>

My heart goes out to all the people in Japan.

I saw the whole thing live when getting ready for PAX. Just when I was about to be excited about PAX is when something like this to put me down. I am pretty sure everyone is going to be watching the tsunamis tomorrow (or shall I say later in the morning). The show will go on but in the back in my mind, my people are dying out there. I am quite bummed right now. I miss my girlfriend, and she's living in Tokyo.

God damned, this is awful >.< I hope everyone is doing okay, my thoughts are currently for all those involved, and my heart goes out to the families who have already lost someone <3

The police forces around here are going to be closing the beaches at 5 AM. Supposedly they're going door to door in areas they feel might get hit by the tsunami waves to inform people of what's up, and evacuate them if necessary.

I've got lots of people in Japan I know and love. They live in the Saitama prefecture which is father inland, but I still can't help but be worried. Hope the aftershocks are over.

Anyone know if Hokkaido was affected at all?
All the news sites keep saying "Northern Japan", but the maps show only Honshu to be affected.

@thrall pic: I have to admit I laughed, but still too soon T_T

Its a conspiracy to attack the californian coastline with huge flood waves.

She has a wireless connection going to contact me, but she was able to send me text messages through her smartphone. She says that the trains are all shutting down for a long while and she's resorting to her bicycle to ride home. She says that the the area is really calm but only getting worse as people try to figure what to do in the night of little power.

NHK just announced that Japan is now under a nuclear state emergency because the technicians can't cool the reactors. No leak, but this could be bad if they don't get the power to cool them.
