One thing to keep in mind is that while there's a lot to do, not all of it is lucrative or worth your time. Also, it takes a long time to train skills deeply enough in a specific aspect of the game to make it worth the investment, so do a lot of reading before you make a decision, and then stick with it.

I wouldn't recommend mining. It's boring, missions are worth a lot more, and it's only really worth it when you can get together with a bunch of other miners and go to very dangerous areas where the best ores and ice are available.

Training combat skills is something I've never regretted. More diversity in your ability to fit ships, fly different ships, and effectively hit/damage/defend against damage in combat will help you succeed in missions and in PvP.

What I'd really recommend is trying to fall in with a PvP fleet or corporation and training combat skills. That'll allow you to do missions on the side, and to enjoy the most thrilling part of the game, which is roaming around looking for something to murder. The satisfaction and rush that you get out of grabbing enemy players and destroying their ship while all the time aware of the fact that you're outrunning death yourself is the most fun I've ever had in any game.

Be ready to invest a lot of time. Network, network, network, NETWORK with other people. While you can fly around in certain specialist ships and gank small ships solo, you'll be much better off roaming with a fleet and taking down POSs.
Hm, sounds like real life game Ship insted of a car.. What the heck, it sounds decent enough, I'll try the trial..
Anyone of you playing the game? Or wanna try trial with me? :P

It really is a submarines in space/future corporate wars/space cowboy/space spy career simulator. It takes the whole alternate reality/personality aspect of MMOs to a heavy extreme. Be prepared to be vicious and play to win if you want to exceed.

Some of the most epic events in the history of the game were massive multi-year setups culminating in someone revealing themselves as a traitor, taking all the money and assets from a corporate dynasty, and causing it to disband. Very trolololol.

That said, companionship and domination are where the fun is. I'd play, but I stopped paying my account on account of being a poor college student away from home with no money and no time away from studies.

As I said in a prior post, the game doesn't hold your hand or tell you what to do. A lot of people have a hard time with no being given a purpose or a laundry-list to check items off of, so it seems complicated. Just like life, you have to grab it by the nads and build your dream with whatever's in arms reach.

    Just no.

If you are bored of the game you are bored of the game. Just because there are things you haven't seen or accomplished doesn't mean you can't be bored of the game. There are plenty of things I and others who have quit the game could do but we don't do them because they don't appeal to us... it's not because we can't think of things we haven't done.

I've been clearing all the content for years, levelled 9 of the classes (no DK) to at least level 80 (3 to 85), Had nearly all the achievements including server 1sts at the end of WOTLK etc etc etc.... I was working through the WOTLK hard modes and would have got 13/13 soon if I hadn't quit (my old guild is now just missing Sinestra) but I was tired of the whole boring repeating cycle that WOW has become. Sure I could level yet another alt and play through the new eastern kingdoms quests which i've never done but there is no motivation to do so because the game got stale (to us).

About the only thing I never put much time into was in arena... I tried it around the end of the Burning Crusade but I never really had much fun with it. I prefer first person shooters such as Battlefield 2 for "PVP" gaming. The only thing i've really loved in the last 2 expansions was Ulduar...

Uhm, so none of you play this game?

Ninja salvaging other players' mission wrecks too. Or did they nerf that by now?

EVE is the kind of game where ripping off and griefing other players is actually encouraged. Might be fun, if you like this sort of thing.
One thing to watch out for is EVE community. Many players have attitude issues worse than random heroic tanks, and will insult you and harass you if you as much as mention that you ever had an active WoW subscription.

I personally love EVE, but it is EXTREMELY unfriendly towards new players.

Yeah, that's one thing I forgot to mention.

Successful fleets are usually run by abusive fleet commanders. They will yell, they will curse, but if you listen, **** gets done. It's pretty much the military in a video game, because you have to listen, or many many people will be losing quite a bit of money.

Granted, most of the time they're not actually angry. It's just goes along with that whole guys-way of being aggressive and dominant with eachother, busting eachothers balls, and cursing eachother out in jest.

Pretty sure too, it's fun to scan ships down and get their wrecks, but I believe if they haven't looted yet you will get flagged by their corp for a bit.

So I thought EVE; can that be something for me? I would love some personal comments on the game, if you play it or have tried it.

The whole not having a character moving around with it, is kinda.. awh, why not? :|
    Any comments, I appreciate it.
WoW is like a fast-food restaurant: Easy food, tasty and somewhat addictive. Yet ultimately unsatisfying for reasons you can't quite understand.

EVE Online is pretty much the exact opposite to WoW in almost every way (good and bad).

EVE is like a 5 course french meal that you have to prepare yourself: Hard work, requires discipline and some help but ultimately very gratifying.

EVE isn't very newby-friendly and not exactly intuitive. It doesn't reward you constantly and sometimes it's just a bore. However once you get into an Alliance, start cooperating with fellow players and build up your social network, it gets better and better. EVE Online has a vast Meta-Game that doesn't reveal itself until you get really involved in it. Unfortunately getting there takes time and discipline.

On the topic of EVE, I played it for a few months and a relative has played it for years. From just my experience the game is mostly about making money, that is the ultimate purpose of the game. There is world pvp, but financial interests of the big corporations is what causes these kinds of battles. There are also some definite cheese maneuvers in higher end play but I have not done enough to lay them all out. From my interpretation of my relative's experience the corporations are corrupt many times and do many things out of self interest, with fewer servers to play on a large population inhibits the same space. If you are not a fan of the prisoner mentality of "be bubba's girlfriend" then this group centered mmo may not be for you. Just realize you need good friends that are established in EVE if you hope to survive long at all out in the yard =).
Just because there are things to offer doesn't make them fun. As for EVE of course it's centered around money most games are (of some sort) whether it's actualy currency or badges/emblems. A lot of guilds in wow are corrupt and dickish they just don't have the freedom to do things that EVE does. EVE devs encourage that and that's why I liked it when I tried it out. There aren't fewer servers they are just clustered and when you move from system to system you could be changing servers. It is group centered but no more than wow is. You can stay in safer areas and solo or get a group and go pvp/pve/mine in lower security areas. You do the same thing in wow the only reason you don't see roaming bands of pvpers is because there aren't as many people concentrated in some areas.

I think the game is amazing...a little hard to digest if you have played hack and slash RPGs for years but it's definitely a good game and has a good following. I am looking forward to being able to walk around space stations and I don't know how exactly it's going to be implemented but they got some FPS that I thought I saw could be played on consoles that directly tied into the EVE online universe with battles taking place on planets.

I just wish I could paint my damned ship lol.

EDIT: Oh and since the first time I ever played the game they have seemed to jump leaps and bounds with new player experiences ive seen that chart before and it's funny as hell and was somewhat accurate but not nearly as bad as it was.

you can salvage other players wrecks but you can't tractor them afaik.

the slagging off in eve is extremely high when you have a multi coloured local chat, the scamming, well meh most of the scams are obvious, if you see the 'i'm quiting eve send me xx isk and ill double it' yeah if you did that, its amazing how you managed to turn on a pc.

but really there isn't much grieving either, low sec is worst than null sec imho and probably where most if any griefing comes from and you can only kill someone once and they could reclone in any station, greifing in eve you would have to die, fly back to where you died, die again then its your own fault.

Everything but the combat was brilliant or unique in eve, however the combat just wasn't engaging enough for me to stay interested. Played it for 9months.

    Eve is an Alt+Tab game.

You just have it in the backround while you play some other game. That is untill 30 days played.
Your greed, your foolishness has brought you to this end.

dont start eve if you want to play casual.

    starting eve is hard
    playing eve is hard
    eve is time consuming
you have to read A LOT
you can loose EVERYTHING in seconds
eve is a sandbox. there are no real goals/quests/endbosses

but it owns in so many ways... it is very fun if you find a good corp, it is never boring and you can do virtually anything you want.
    i love it.

I really enjoyed eve when I played it. I didn't go hardcore and stuff and I just took it easy with mining and earning money

Anyway, if you don't already see where I'm going with this, allow me to spell it out: the only meaningful MMORPG "endgame" -- i.e., something novel to do after the progression process is over -- is that of the sandbox.
