I would have to second stranger in a strange land by Robert Heinlein and the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov . Or pretty much anything by Isaac Asimov or Robert Heinlein.

Lot's of good suggestions here, so I won't repeat. Just want to add my favorite sci-fi books of all time:

The Commonwealth Saga by Peter F. Hamilton. Made up of two books, Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained. Brilliant epic hard sci-fi space opera. The man does an incredible job forecasting where the technological advancement of wormhole travel would lead society, from a cultural and political standpoint. On top of that, he crafted an incredible and top notch thriller encompassing politics, war, science, commerce and so forth.

A Logic Named Joe is a series of Sci Fi book of short stories. It was written by Murray Leinster, and published in 1946. Some of the earliest work "predicting the internet". A lot of other early concepts of Sci Fi.

The Dead Space novel was surprisingly good. I don't know if you like Dead Space or not but I recommend it if you're a fan of the games.

Dominant Species was entertaining until it got all PSYCHIC POWERS!!!! on you. Then it just felt cheesy. I can't really think of any others at the moment that haven't already been listed.

Someone linked to 'The_culture' on wikipedia. Let me second that suggestion: Banks is a great author. I think you would like 'The Player of Games'. It is the easiest place to start and is a sort of first-contact scenario.

Enders Game is good, you could also read some Greg Bear. Very 'hard' sci-fi.
