depends on how u write it, seeing as u can't really show in this format how it is meant to be interpreted both is equally right (imo)

    48/2(9+3) is = 2

    48
    --- (9+3) = 288
    2

288, because devide and multipliers are equal to each other in the case of what to take first.

    that means: 48/2= 24

    24x12=288

Swear I quoted something almost exactly the same as this, but with Brackets and Indicies as the first two instead.. ;P

Can be two answers to that one due to it being impossible to see what the one that wrote the problem meant.
First one : 48/(2(9+3)) After a / there is an invisible () so that number has prio and then the answer would be 48/(2*12)=2
    Second one : 48/2 * 12 = 24*12 = 288

The divide comes before the multiplying, newb.

Can't believe people are so terrible at simple math on this forum, rofl.

If the whole 2(9+3) is in the denominator then it's 2.
If only 2 is in the denominator then it's 288.

How is your first example different from the second?

Gee, I'd like to see this forum tackle second degree equations.

He is assuming parenthesis where there isn't one.

No. 48/2(9+3) = 288 in that form just as much. Multiplication and division are equally "strong" and should be dealth with in the order they are in.

The question has been answered and I'm not sure we need a thread devoted to laughing at people. If you want to see 98 pages of what this thread would look like if I left it open, go here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/view...opic_id=210235

I'm not sure if this is some 4chan meme spreading to other sites or just a concidence, but still Locked.
