what happened to my DL rate?? (new computer)

i used to have a 2008 mac book pro

now i have a custom desktop brand new, performs MUCH better (windows 7 system)

the internet i have can download at a rate at 10 mb/s

i know this because on the mac it did actually download things almost that fast.. 5-8 mb/s in most cases.

but now on my new system, its going at a max of 1.2 mb/s

i dont know if i have some setting holding back my download rate or what, anyone know why my download rate dropped when switching machines??

(i use norton 360, if this is causing it can someone help me fix it?)

Is your connection 10 Mega"BITS" or 10 Mega"BYTES" Because most providers state megabits. If it's 10 Megabits, then 1.2 MegaBYTES per second is about right for download speed. The question is, did the Mac display things in bits or bytes?

Your connection is 10mb from your house to your ISP. From your house to wherever you are downloading from is not going to be 10mb/s

even if its megabits, and it is supposed to be 1.2 megabytes.

what explains that prior to getting this new computer i would download files as big as 1.7 gigs in 5 minutes. up to an hour =/

Not all servers are created equal. Find a file you can download on the Mac at the speed you say you can, let it finish. Now download the exact same one on the PC. If it differs then you might have an issue.

macs have better nic's then pc's, but not 10x better, could be an issue with cabling, CAT-3 vs CAT-5e etc

    try using speedtest.net

Er, not really? Same hardware, some of them do use Intel NICs, which is ideal, but most do not. They use the same integrated NIC chipsets that most other laptops and desktops use.

    marvells ?

Marvell's are "ok", better than realtek for sure. All of my computers here use Marvell as the integrated NIC, except one of the laptops which has an intel. The Desktops have the integrated turned off, and I use something better in their place.
