Bad First Impressions that turned out to be wrong

I remember years ago, when I first got ultima online I played the game like 5 minutes, had no clue what to do and was basically like "wow, this sucks" and I turned it off. I didn't bother even playing it for several days until I got bored again (which is why I bought something new in the first place) and decided to give it another go and see what I could do.

After a while of playing it, I started to love the game and to this day it is still my favorite MMO (at least in it's prime) and the one I played the second longest of any of them, second only to WOW now. The depth and freedom was just amazing and if I had never given it a second chance or a second look and simply uninstalled it, I would've missed out on years of awesome fun with great memories and great friends.

Anyone else have a similar experience with a game?

I kind of had a good first impression that turned into a bad first impression and now im desperately trying to turn around into a good one again. When I first got Secret of Mana for Super Nintendo I had heard so many good things about it so I was really hyped to start playing it. I have yet to really get into the game. I keep saying to myself that im gonna start a new game over again and really get into it but it just doesn't work that way. Im hoping that some day I can start it again and really enjoy it but I have other games I rather play first. I also have the same exact problem with NiGHTS into Dreams on Sega Saturn with everyone saying how great it is but I just cant find whats to great about it but would like to start playing it again.

Another first impression I am very glad I was wrong about was when Brutal Legend first came out. Now I have a strict personal policy that I don't really like games that try and work in real life people and products into games. When I heard all the stuff about like Ozzy Osbourne and other singers having cameos in the game I really thought that they literally were going to be characters in the game acting like their real life selves. The games case even sort of implies that. How glad I am that they only voice characters in the game and are not playing as their real life selves.

The first time I played Legend of Dragoon I only made it about an hour in before I turned it off in disgust. The translation was so bad and the pace so slow, that I was totally ready to hang up the towel. But I got bored and started the game over and found a wonderful little gem of poorly translated awesome. It's fun to play!

Another one that I had a bad impression of was FF9. I was dead certain that nothing could top FF7 - and boy was I wrong (but god, does that game go slowly for the first couple hours).

I kinda had that experience with World of Warcraft. I tried it back in vanilla and the first thing that got me was how horrendous the graphics were. I'd played games like Guild Wars that had such small system requirements and such awesome graphics, that I was just dumbfounded by how bad the WoW graphics were, and I didn't really make it very far into that trial. I came back after BC and was able to actually keep going that time and when WotLK came out I was more motivated. Sadly with the decline shortly there after and the mess that was Cataclysm I ended up leaving for good and sticking to games that had more to offer. I will admit that I didn't give WoW a fair chance to begin with, and it did turn out to be a little better than I initially expected, at least for a while.

Sim city 4. I hated it because.. I don't remember.. but think it was because of UI changes vs SC 3000, couldn't find some stuff that I wanted to have and didn't like the "we build the roads now"-animations and delay in building them damn roads when I was painting them out.

Returned the game actually. But later got it for a bargain price, accepted the game for what it was and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Sim City Societies straight out sucked, imo, though, and I won't give it another chance ever.

    Midevil "Total War" series.

I found it boring and frustrating when I started. After getting into it and figuring out what was going on, I enjoyed it a lot more.

Alpha Protocol, the FUCKING HACKING gets far, far easier, nearly even playable after the first couple of missions.

I bought both Legend of Zelda games for the N64 at the same time. I couldn't get into either of them, I thought they were horrible. I revisited them a few months later and finished them both rather quickly. I guess I just wasn't in the mood for an adventure.

Dynasty Warriors 2 in the PS2, at first I was like, why am I killing all these people over and over again it seems endless and useless. Later I got addicted to the story of the romance of the three kingdoms and the characters that play a role in it.

A fey days ago I bought Dynasty Warriors 7, yes I am in love with these games now.

    Never had something like this.

When I buy a game (and that only on rare occasions), I have covinced myself that it is really worth it by gathering information about it. And I was not disappointed by a single game I bought, ever. As expected.

no information is perfect, that's why gathering information doesn't lead to a perfect outcome every time.

I'm hoping personally that my HoN experience will turn around.

I use to play DoTA with friends at LANs, now we are casual DoTA players and so once I moved away from home I couldn't play any longer at LANs, so I decided to pick up HoN. Having a widescreen monitor totally fucks up my playing experience with the Height vs Width viewing.

One thing I don't understand is why we can't zoom out way the hell more because Shroud is Shroud, at least to a reasonable zoom. I just hate knowing that my shroud vertically is viewable, but I have to move my screen and it just completely sucks. But I really want to get into it without teammates every match bitching or complaining about me being new and sucking. =/ Communities ruin games more than they build them up.

I thought Starcraft was horrible because the computer came and crushed me in like 5 mins each time I tried to play a vs AI game.

I still don't understand any of them, it was mindless killing to me

I'd have to say Dead Rising was one game that turned out like that. I couldn't STAND the controls at first, and had such basic weapons and necessities to start, but once I got past the first Psycho battle (Mine was the killer clown with the miniature chainsaws. ...Andy, I think his name was.) the game really took off for me.

This happens to me all the time, actually. Here are some the more recent or memorable, but there are certainly others not coming to mind:

The Witcher: The absolutely awful prologue/tutorial to this game really turned me off the first time I played. When the enhanced edition came out, I decided to give it another shot. The prologue wasn't really improved (the dialogue was a little less jointed at least), but I powered through it out of curiousity. The first chapter was a slight improvement over the prologue, but once I reached the second chapter of the game, I found it was a total gem of an RPG. The second chapter was one of the more complicated "whodunnit" cases I've seen in a game, all wrapped in delicious RPG goodness. By the end of the game, I even grew to like the obtuse combat system. (plus the naughty cards were a good gimmick to promote exploring, heh)

Morrowind: I remember making the decision to buy Neverwinter Nights over Morrowind when they both came out in the same relative time. I did play a friend's copy, and I found the game to be extremely boring. I used that as justification to buy NWN instead. A few years later, the farthest I had gotten in NWN was the end of chapter 2, but I had joyously completed Morrowind several times over.

Should I ever revisit the game, I am hoping it will happen with FF12. Everything I've read about it indicates it actually has a sophisticated and mature plot (despite a good first part of the game convincing you the bumbling idiot shotaboy Vaan is the main hero...) If they had slightly more overt with their characters, and transferred the PoV character from Vaan to anyone else, I probably would have stuck with it the first time around. Anyway, the writer for the TV-Tropes page painted the game in a much better light than I would have given it, so I'm partially inspired to give it another shot.
