But if they start losing, they might miss the playoffs like Toronto usually does.

someone needs to tell the Kings the season is only 48 games long so they can't afford to be shitty for the first 60 games again

We go for the record tomorrow night. Why can't we be playing Columbus . Gunna be a tough game to win with that pressure at home and the Nucks wanting so bad to give the first regulation L.

The Hawks are 24-2-7 since acquiring Johnny Oduya last year from the Jets. That's looking like a pretty good deal Stan made but it still pales in comparison to the Leddy for Barker trade. That was just robbery.

Holy crap did Mason get shelled. Six goals in 33 minutes, Trotz pulled him way too late.

Seems like riding Rinne till he falls over from exhaustion is the way to go this season...

Seems like everyone is having sucky goaltending except for the Leafs (barring an injury, Reimer still is among the top 20 goalies in save % and GAA), Ducks and Canucks. Hell must be freezing over. Most of the teams that have good goalies have had pretty shitty netminding lately it seems.

  6. #15146
A few of the goalies didn't play during the lockout as well, which might explain their performance. For the rest, slumps happen.

Can't put it all on Mason, only about two of those goals were ones that were really given up by him. One was a crazy ass bouncing puck, other was a PP goal from the point without much screening. Past that the were all defensive break downs that left men entirely alone at point blank range or were break aways. Of course you can't forget the worst call I've seen all year with Dusquene damn near at the top of the circles with the puck coming in behind him and they didn't call it offsides.

It may have been a loss but I don't feel bad about this one. We broke down defensively which will get corrected, but more importantly these guys have remembered how to put pucks in the net again. If we can get the mistakes corrected and keep the offense, the rest of the season is going to be fun to watch.

Worst of the game is that we lost Gaustad, dude has been a beast in the face off circle.

Haven't been this excited about a game in a long while - Chicago/Van tomorrow night promises to be a glorious affair (as long as both teams show up), and it would be sweet to see Vancouver hand the Hawks their first regulation loss (if it's even possible :P)

Honestly even if Chicago takes it I'll still be happy because they're pushing that record and also because Kane's comments (or maybe it was Sharp's) earlier this season about Luongo have made me find a lot more respect for that club than i used to have.

I like it when we can have rivalries based on mutual respect and competition, not ones based on revenge hits and after-game verbal jabs. It is my dream that one day Vancouver will lift themselves to a more respected position amongst the other teams, and their fans, of the NHL.

Oh, and of course, I dream that one day we'll get Cup #1 as well :P Maybe.

Luongo on the shootout goal scored against him 5 hole last night in the Canucks loss to the Blues:

    "Almost had him...."

Seriously, I saw the highlight and it looks like he didn't even try to shut the 5 hole.

Well, chances are when you're pulling your thighs closed and everything is happening so quick, you probably feel like you're closer than you might be to stopping a shot. Likewise if you watch the highlight afterwards your mind is still watching it within the context of you knowing you were trying to close that hole up and that feeling of being almost there.

That's why is always so easy to be an armchair cynic - we're completely removed from the context of the event and all the physical and emotional variables that players are experiencing. Everyone who has played a sport knows that sometimes you're giving it your all but the people watching think you're just going through the motions.

I'm not saying he should or shouldn't have let the goal in, I'm just saying that it's perfectly valid of him to say that he almost had it, because only he has all the information.

Depends on players like Burrows and Lapierre (is Lapierre still on the team?) if they can stop doing stupid shit. Fans have to stop acting like they've won the cup when they haven't as well.

    Kessel scores on Theodore.

Not all their fans are like that though The stupid thing is, it's even hard to be a Canucks fan in Vancouver, because, and I'm not even kidding, it's considered really cool to hate the team. Seriously, it's like hockey hipsters - hating the Canucks is a more verbally present pastime for Vancouverites than cheering for them is, just because "it's cool to hate mainstream sports when we have a moderately successful team", and frankly that disgusts me.

Regarding Burrows and Lapierre - I completely agree, though I'd rather just see them quell their yapping and shit and just play the game than see them shipped somewhere else. They're inherently skilled players, they just coat it with so much French Canadian machismo and arrogance that people get sick of it.

One thing I do think, though, is that fans who have had very little contact with French Canadian psyche and general comportment probably think that the way Lapierre and Burrows act is relatively unique to them when in fact a significant amount of that yappiness and flamboyance is pretty ingrained in the culture itself. Not that it justifies their actions within the context of a major league sport, nor that I like it or want them to play that way; just an observation that I think might be true.

Fair enough, and I've said this a hundred times earlier in the thread. It's really just the fans who make fun of the Leafs for not winning the Cup since '67 when Vancouver has never done it (existed 3 years later) like they have a right to make fun of someone else. I used to really like Vancouver; Pavel Bure was my favourite player growing up. However, after speaking with several hardcore Vancouver fans during the last few years, it's made me really hate the team. I honestly find Bruins fans a hundred times more tolerable than Canucks fans that I cheered for the Bruins to win in 2011. I also worry that if Canucks do win the Stanley Cup the entire city will turn into a giant pile of unbearable asshats.

In other news, how do you call a penalty and a dive? Either say the player was penalized or say the player embellished nothing.
Kadri scores! Hope the Leafs can keep this type of defense up for the next three decades. Great job Carlyle's done with this team it seems. MacArthur too.

They've done that a few dozen times in the last few years. It's a little confusing like the goalie interference shit.

Scrivens has been on fucking FIRE as of late. Way to step it up after Reimer goes out with an injury.

And it's amusing that people still say the Leafs should get a veteran goalie. Scrivens backing up Reimer at this point, seems like a logical choice. We are talking about a good quality rookie goalie who has spent a few years in the minors and is getting some quality coaching to boot. Scrivens was dominant in the AHL last year, it's no surprise that he is able to play well in the NHL after a few years in the Marlies. Another genius acquisition by Burke, an undrafted goalie who came out of the ECAC league as one of the nominees for the Hobey Baker Award, was named to the first All American All Star team in his senior year, and went on to play for Reading in the ECHL before being assigned to the Marlies in the late part of the 2010-2011 season. Scrivens is an excellent story and I pray he is the real deal, the Leafs need all the quality goalies they can get.
