Putrefaction you've caused, No need for confession. Now you wish you had a god, To stop your demolition. Crushing the bones of the hundred folds, Swinging the judgement hammer. Man, woman, child no-one is safe The heads of the dead are the banner.

Some decent names in this thread so far, but most music is so watered down now it's difficult for me to really pick a great one.

Also, musician and lyricist aren't necessarily the same thing. Some amazing songs are written by someone and sang by someone else so ;\
mate, im 44 this year & have been into a lot of music in that time. every one of the above artists have had a baring on my musical tastes at various times in my life, so i feel are well deserving of an individual mention

Come on! as much as I adore Mustaine ( Yes, idd the new-religious thing is a bummer ). Kirk can play circles around any of the newage bands (Mustaine's better of course.)

In my opinion it's insulting to truly gifted/talented musicians when they are placed behind a group of extremely commercially successful sellouts like Metallica.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Metallica fan, but greatest musicians? Give me a break. They're average musicians with above average marketability. Nothing more.

    Knopfler?
    Muse / Bellamy?
    The Pink Floyds?

IMHO, Bach is the first, he wrote the rules every one else applied in occidental music...

It's really hard to tell, seeing how the classical composers contributed to music so much. But there are so many great bands and artists that existed in the 20th century. So I guess I'm gonna have to divide it up.

Classical: I'm gonna have to say Bach.
Modern Classical: Igor Stravinsky (spelling?), barely beat out John Williams
Modern Popular: A tough one, but I'm gonna have to say Led Zeppelin, seeing how they took what everyone before them made, and made it kickass. Music as you now it wouldn't exist without Led Zeppelin. And one more reason, a little thing called Physical Graffiti.

So you are saying Kirk is better then the nu metal/whatnot guitar players that cant even pull a decent solo? that doesnt make him any good

I voted Mozart because he is the GREATEST musician on that list. Someone mentioned Bach and Beethovn, thumbs up for them

One problem: greatest musician is a bit subjective. many ppl will reply with the musician they like the most, even if he cant arrange anything musically complex. whereas for me thats the core of being a great musician.

    Isaac Brock.
Raw music, not the uninspired kiddy pop bullshit you hear on the radio.
One of the best lyricists of our time. Or all time.
    On the list, Mozart.
I play piano, and I try to write a little, so it really puts into perspective how much of a genius he was.
