Rush, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, some of the early progressive rock bands. I'd mention Yes, but I can't stand their singer.

Edit: Someone mentioned Porcupine Tree, which is one I forgot. They are great, a good mix of really hard rock with some progressive writing. Funnily enough they opened for Rush several years ago, though no one has opened for Rush since the R30 tour. Porcupine Tree are really worth checking out, I highly recommend The Incident, some of the tracks remind me of Moving Pictures with the synth work on the album.

    Its metalcore.

The best example of power metal is Blind Guardian and Helloween.

Here's a few that deserve recognition:

Galneryus - One of my all-time favourite metal bands, they're Japanese but INCREDIBLY good.
    Heavenly
Maladaptive (not quite power, but more prog with semi-growling vocals)
    Symphony X
    Dream Evil
    Power Quest
    Luca Turilli's non-Rhapsody albums
    Aina
    Avantasia

Wow, no one mentioned Queensrÿche? Best progressive metal band I've ever heard. It's like a better version of Pink Floyd.

Dream Theater has some amazing stuff. Their music is always good. Their lyrics can be pain inducing though.
