This is the case in the majority of game design.
Also WvW itself is a completely self contained game mode. One can level and gear within WvW. Spending nearly the entirety of their GW2 play time in WvW alone.
There is a penalty for dying in PVE world. There is a penalty for dying in PVP world. Win/loss is not an absolute in WvW as in SPVP.
If you don't really care about wvw but say, meh wth i'll just go. You get discouraged by the repairs since it's always subtracting X amount of money for repairs.
If you decide to quit because of this it means you weren't all that interested in wvw to begin with so the non-interested players get weeded out.
The same thing happens in reverse. If you do care repairs won't matter to you so you'll stay and in the end gain X amount of money.
I'd recommend starting in Lions Arch - just near one of the eastern Vistas there is the entrance to a good one. You will have to jump into a mouth-like cave... not that easy to find that entrance though.
I love this game dont get me wrong, Its a nice change from Wow, (I play both) however the gem thing bugs me, not so much in itself but the fact you have to spend a lot of gold on gems to unlock extra bank space and character slots, should it not be enough we paid for the game? I like how the first post mentioned how these gems dont give an advantage but in a way they do, (Experience Booster) It also kind of forces you to buy the keys just to open the chests that I keep obtaining quite regularly.
All said, I do love this game, didnt at first but ive really gotten into it, I love how you can just go do something which you planned to do and at the end of an hour, you've sidetracked and done something completely different. I couldnt afford rift aswell as Wow anymore so this is perfect to have, I love the events that always pop up which everyone can do, I wish Wow had this, props to you though Arena net for a massive great game.
^ I actually love the gem-store system. Never before in any game with ingame-store was I able to buy anything I wanted without spending real money. In GW2 I bought quite a few things out of the store (3 bankslots, 1 characterslot, 5philosophers stones) and only payed with ingame-gold.
experience booster have imho a pretty different meaning in this game since you get to max. level really fast without those and will get scaled down (or up if we look at Fractal-dungeons or WvW) anyway, not matter which level you have. Never bought a booster, never used one despite I have a few from those black lion chests in my bank... it just doesn't seem worth it. They only count for kills anyway, the most amount of xp you get for events, farming nodes and exploring the world.
Leveling faster via booster is no advantage over anyone.
SPVP is equalized.
WvW is meant to be asymmetrical casual PVP.
There is no advantage you can buy in the gem shop at all.
The thing with WvW is GW2 pushes you into it whether you like it or not. They're halfway there by removing the WvW requirement of the monthly achievement, but you still need to do it for map completion.
I know that the couple of times I've been in WvW whenever I died the only point I've been allowed to res at is the zone in WP, which I personally thought was deterrent enough without the added repair costs. I don't know if it's always like that or if eventually you actually get to res closer to where you die.
Not that I would mind the occasional PVP in WvW, but getting shot at or knocked off a ledge as I was trying to reach a skill point is 100% intolerable to me.
When I set goals/tasks I pursue them with robotic efficiency with no interruption or change in plans allowed.
I wish they would have the monthly like they are going to do with the daily, be able to choose which tasks to do to complete it. I would take WvW over dungeons or fractals in a hearbeat.
Totally unrelated, I decided to try and get map completion for Orr with my as-yet-undeleted elementalist. Since they nerfed Orr so hard it should be fairly easy and the rewards should be worth it. Unfortunately, every time I log onto her it's just painful.
Never before have I wished that a game had race changing available because I typically don't mind rerolling, but with everything in GW2 being so expensive... ugh. Just looking at all the dyes I've collected on her (before they shot up 500%+ in price) let alone the fact that she has maxed jeweler/artificing (with almost all the recipes). X_X I keep trying to tell myself that even if they did have race changing available it'd probably end up costing me as much gold (in gems) to do it as it will re-leveling professions and replacing all the dyes, but it doesn't help much. :P

I don't think its THAT bad, the zones have great atmosphere Malchors Leep is hauting and beautiful.
The Temple Of Lyssa must be architecturally the best looking thing ingame.
Its just...no hearts...Meh, pitty. Most events are Group events, and the solo onces is just waves of undead spawning around an escort or defendable location.
I feel my warrior becoming boring fast, the damage is very nice, and my survivability build is great. But now that most of my gear is exotic, the only thing left for me to do is Dungeons, and Ive heard they are not really all that fun to begin with, and without a LFG system Im afraid ill get booted because of gear or doing the dungeon for the first time.
But I need the dungeons for my monthly, I really want those jugs for my new guardian that Im going to roll. /sigh

Any wurm that spits is a good one to use for the dodge. Also if you have a thief that uses D/D, gather a group of mobs, preferably melee, and death blossom in the middle of them. I've gotten all of the dodges after three uses of death blossom before.
If you have a thief just hit up a body of water, gather up a bunch of mobs, and spam spear #5. It's the fastest/easiest way I've found to get the dodging daily done and it can be done in Queensdale just as easily as anywhere else.
