guilds wars doesn't require monthly fees, not sure about the expansions though
Guild Wars has no monthly fee, and I believe you need the original GW to play the expansions (but don't quote me on that second part)
Okeeeeeeeeey.
which of these stand alones are best to buy and upgrade with eye of the north?

You can get an all in one package for about 20-30 dollars at Steam or Direct to Drive
It's advisable to atleast get Factions and Nightfall because of heroes and access to pretty much every skill.

You can digitally download and purchase from steam as mentioned previously.
What you'll miss out on from not getting all three campaigns is, Hours of gameplay, close to 300 skills and abilities, access from some (one or two) to nearly all heroes (minus the 10 that you get from EoTN). And you will lose access to two to four professions (classes).

Yes, once you have the trial you should be able to go to the Guild Wars in Game Store and make the digital purchase. However, it's more expensive. The Trilogy (the first 3 games, not including the Eye of The North expansion) are $29.99 via their store, and the expansion is another $19.99 They plan to run several items per week for the next few weeks, "On Sale" but no idea which ones.
As for the connection issues, there is a thread about it here http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/...on-t15354.html basically some sort of network server interruption or something right now. It's being worked on, but it's not exactly on their end, seems to be a routing issue. You may have issues when someone down the street might not and vice-versa.

Agreed. Not all the skills are Core either, so if you want to PvP in the game you might put yourself at a disadvantage by not having access to all the skills by not having all the games.
Can I buy like trialogy from NCSoft and EotN from steam and somehow attach it to my account?

I don't recommend spending money on Guild Wars, especially several years after the devs stopped giving a shit (and even when they gave a shit they were... well, Gaile's talk page has always been a great laugh), but if you insist on it, get all the campaigns and the expansion. If you don't get Prophesies, you don't get a bunch of good skills; if you don't get Factions, you miss out on two broken professions; if you don't get Nightfall, you don't get two broken professions, a ton of broken skills, or the majority of the heroes; if you don't get Eye of the North, you don't get the closest thing they have to PvE content.
You can buy any one of the campaigns (Prophesies, Factions, or Nightfall) on their own, but having Eye of the North requires an existing account with one of the campaigns. Prophesies is not required for Eye of the North, though they take place on the same continent (much like you can play 1-60 WoW without Cataclysm); there are a few bonus quests and such for Prophesies characters in the Eye of the North areas, but Prophesies has the problem of requiring you to do fifty billion quests (as opposed to the fifty million of the other campaigns), so you'll likely skip them since they're not important/rewarding/interesting anyway.
By the way, that little girl with the flute and the red cape? Stay the fuck away, she'll light you on fire and giggle.
