Computer Nub wants to build a computator

So... I want to buy/build/rent/handcraft/conjure a new computer. I have no idea how to build one, what I'm looking for, or... anything. All I know is I want a sexy little beasty. Now... I'm sure I could just look at the guides for this, but I was hoping that someone here could explain what pieces I would need, and what the purpose of those pieces is, and maybe even a little bit of a "X is good for this, while Y is good for that, becauuuuuse."

I'm really hoping more to gain the information I would need to be able to build myself a decent computer more than once without being horribly confused on what to buy than anything with this.
