Wow on the decline? (lost 600k subscribers)

    Hope it's not old.

    Mike Morhaime:
-WoW lost 600,000 subscribers this quarter with subscriber counts returning to pre Cataclysm levels.
-Also, subscriber numbers are dropping faster than after previous expansions.

Yes, I am an Alliance fanboy
No, I'm not gonna miss 50% of the game for some stupid ridiculous faction fight

This will no doubt come from third party sources and as such no one on these forums with give you even the slightest bit of air time.

EDIT: Well I'll be an ignorant devil...

Only blizz knows the exact amount of subs. No other 3rd party software has this information. Therefore all such statements (both stating a loss, or a gain) are false by definition.

I think absolute numbers are the worst way to look at a game's popularity. Subscriber numbers are very much skewed by factors like

    - Unpurchased time cards counting toward subscriber numbers
    - Net cafes inflating subscriber counts all over the world
    - People who multibox (but this isn't a huge factor)

Wow is popular, but not as popular as you think.

The statement was released by Blizzard to investors. Mike Morhaime is the Blizzard CEO.

    Here's how it works:
    Hype comes along.
People come back to the game, that's where a massive surge of players comes from.
After a while the hype wears off, some people leave some stay, and also some of the ones that have been playing a long while start to take breaks.
That's where the massive loss comes from.

At least that's how I see it
I'm actually looking for money, work is just an unwanted side effect.

Maybe its just all those goldsellers/hackers giving up, now its harder to get to accounts with the new way to log in, many bought that now
I sure hope they gonna be gone soon

hmmm, i have noticed that my realm is a lil quieter than it used to be, some of my friends on my list havent been on since i cant remember when and i hear stories of recruitment difficulties and some 25 man only guilds have had to turn to doing 10 mans, so theres a definite trend happening i think and im guessing its not just my realm

Just like how with za and zg ppl surged back ZOMG new content... now they clearing it an seeing what it really is just recycled shit nobody wanted to see again and the new "special loot bag" isnt working like intended

This game has a lot of mistakes for having the income that it does.

Given how many people in my guild have called it quits this expansion, i'd believe 600k, if not more.

More like the next content patch after release (fuck 4.1, it didn't happen) took twice as long as every other content patch

Bolded the main thing to take away from this.

At the same time, it's an honest appraisal of the state of the game. At the same time, WoW has been going for nearly 7 years now. It was inevitable that the sub count would start to hit a negative slide at some point. I know it, you know it, Mike Morhaime certainly knew it as well. The fact that they are readying a replacement in Titan, to be released at some point in the next couple of years, and getting ready to release not only Diablo 3, but the new Starcraft expansion over the next 18 months shows there preparation for it.

Now, lets see the "Sky is falling" posts coming next...

It is not surprising to see a surge in subs right before and after an expansion release. The hype and marketing bring new people in and old people back. I have been seeing a lot of guildies and friends quit WoW over the past few months. The fact that WoW is not as newbie friendly as it used to be in Wrath probably is the reason for many to quit after they have farmed whatever they can from Heroics or leveled their characters to 85.

It's been five months since release as of two days ago. Most content patches take five to six months to be released. Twice as long? It's barely even reached the normal length.

Blizzard-Activision ALSO revealed their WoW based income for the last quarter. It had gone up 1/4 since the one before it.

Source - It's on one of the official forums, cba to look it up again.
