Dead Space and Dead Space 2

    !Warning!

If you don't like monsters or any type of "scary" games, I suggest you close the Thread.

I think its freaking amazing and I definitly want Dead Space 3 if it ever happens.

    What is Dead Space?

Dead Space is a survival horror third-person shooter video game, developed by EA Redwood Shores (now known as Visceral Games).

The player takes on the role of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles a polymorphic, virus-like, alien infestation which turns humans into grotesque alien monsters called "Necromorphs", on board an interstellar mining ship named the USG Ishimura.

    Love the Story too.

    So... anyone played it?

I personally find it... not scary. Its atmosphere is okay, but after playing Amnesia, not much scares you. Dead Space has a LOT of jump scares, and they're mostly predictable. Which is what made it well, not scary. Dead Space 2 had the same issues, they said Dead Space 1 was too scary which is why it wasn't successful /point Amnesia (yes I'm making a lot of comparison to this game). Except Amnesia producers, Frictional Games has like 1/20th of the funding Visceral got and yet Frictional produced a better game, and was rewarded best horror game 2010. Dead Space 2 was an abominable shoot em up at the end. You want monsters? Here we'll feed em! Only fun thing is stomping on random bodies.

Edit: Dead Space 2 has too many freaking babies / toddlers, its not scary, its just stupid.

Edit2: Should note Frictional Games' Core team is 5 people. Yes, 5 people.

Magnificent game, though the dead space 2 was very short :S

And I find Dead space games a lot scarier than amnesia, just don't find something irratioal as amnesia scary.

Both are very overrated as horror games, Doom 3 still gets more scares out of me than Dead Space.

Should note every sci-fi / fantasy game is irrational, XD

Anyways, one thing that some people don't like about Amnesia is the Lovecraft style (insanity). I personally like it. Obvious some people don't and find it annoying. That's mainly opinionated.

Doom 3 is monster closet land in my opinion.

Played em both. Enjoyed them quite a bit.

Now at the beginning of DS I was horrified. I didn't know what to expect. The flickering lights, the broken ceiling grates, the shadows and the creeping sounds had me on edge.

But in the middle the fear factor diminished once I knew the "cast" of monsters.

There was one part that left me slightly terrified. I won't go into spoilerz but I knew I was going to play DS2

DS2, not quite scary, more of a fun continuation of the world/characters. I really, REALLY liked Isaac as a character

For anyone debating, I'd highly recommend if you're looking for a new FPS

played them both, love them in a resi 4 style way great third person game but never found anything scary about them due to the fact even on the hardest difficulties you still seem to have enough ammo to get by and can eat through enemies

Now gives me somthing like resi 1 where nothing dies and you never have ammo thats a scare

For me it's not about not liking it, it's about the style not being scary (for me atleast).

Then again, some people find the whole thing outright terrifying. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8k2neQVbko

I enjoyed both of them. The scare factor was only there when they do the "BOO!" crap (lol end of DS1). Overall the story was good, it just didn't scare me as much as Amnesia or Fatal Frame did.

Of course I played Amnesia with a headset on in the dark like it suggested you should....

The dead space series is a must buy for any serious gamer. It has a great story and is well made. If your looking to be scared shitless play amnesia, but if you want some pretty terrifying combat play DS2, its quite difficult on just the hard difficulty. I wouldnt even mess with the insane mode(is that what its called? I forget).

I haven't played it, but I did have to sit through a church lock in with people playing it on a projector all night long.

    Wasn't a good night...

I found Amnesia incredibly unsettling and creepy but I don't think it ever crossed the line into "scary" territory for me. The Dead Space series is fantastic, yes it's chock full of "jump out at you" scares, but it's an action game so...that's pretty par for the course. Doesn't devalue the game in any way though, it was still extremely creepy and the atmosphere was pretty great. There were several times I was creeping around a room only to hear the sound of a wrench falling somewhere and even though I knew it was just background sound ambiance, it was enough to unsettle me! And then a necromorph comes crawling up behind me.

Both are amazing and will get you hooked OP

DS 1 is much scarier then 2 by far but only because they actually wanted to focus on the game play and the story within 2 which doesn't mean much; You just wanna play!

I got Dead Space on steam lately (£3.75 how could I not!) and wasn't sure to expect. At first I was scared brick-less but after a while when you know what the necromorphs are and the different types it gets a bit less scary. Havn't finished it yet so not reading the whole thread in case of spoilers, but shaping up to be a good game, even if you have had to change my boxers a few times and apologise to people on Skype for screaming swears :P
