Help me with this mofo riddle!

K, my professor decided to have some fun with us and gave us a riddle to do for extra credit. Here it is:

"Gandalf took a piece of paper 5" by 12" and made a cylindrical can with it. He then put a top and bottom on the can and computed the can's surface area. Frodo did the same with another 5" by 12" piece of paper, getting a larger surface area. How much larger was Frodo's surface area than Gandalf's?"

I've been trying to figure it out for about 15 minutes and gave up. Any help?

They rolled the paper in the other direction, thus granting larger top and bottom with more surface area.

Think of a tall skinny pop can...
Then think of a short fat pop can.

Edit: Oh I didn't read the "How much larger" part. Uhm. I'm about to get off the computer so I will leave you to figure out the "How much larger" part.

    Gandalf's a wizard. I mean...that answer seems pretty obvious.

    2r*pi=circumference is the equation.

Gandalf's circumference=5 so you put that in.

    2r*pi=5

Juggle it about a bit and you get

    5/pi=2r

Play with that and you'll get the radius. pi*r^2 is the area of a circle. Pop in the r (which you just calculated). Double it (two ends of the can) and add to 5*12.

Repeat for Frodo's 12" can and work out the difference. It's an exercise in breaking down a puzzle.

Jokingly: the answer should be who the hell cares, why arent they in mordor yet??!?!

Trying: well i suppose what conzar is saying would be more accurate then what i could come up with in about 8 minutes of thinking, so go with that =]

Got the answer.. Frodo's is 7.04" larger surface area than Gandalf's. I used 3.14 instead of Pi, so if any of you do it, your answer may be a little off.

One does not simply ask politely for help with a maths problem into Mordor!!!

How did Frodo find time to roll a piece of paper in his busy schedule of staring at the ring and gazing longingly at Sam?

I actually did that once way back when I was in high school. We had a bunch of sentences where we had to fill in the blanks and I made a story with the words I put in the blanks (that had absolutely nothing to do with the assignment). Teacher gave me an A for wittiness and creativity.
