I haven't really gotten into doing any heriocs or instances at all up until a week or two ago since the whole Cata "OMG HEROX R HARD" only to find out they aren't as terrible as they were made out to be. So far I'm hitting around 13-17k DPS in ZA/ZG LFD groups while farming valor points and I'm not sure if that's good/bad or what I should expect to be doing.

I think with your gear, that you're doing fairly well, gemming/reforging looks pretty solid. You should use Glyph of Wrath or Glyph of Starsurge in place of Glyph of Starfire pre-4 pc t11. If you feel like spending the money, Power torrent and Lavawalker are pretty easily obtainable since the Zandalari heroics came out.
