    If you are working in Sterling I will assume you are from the UK. www.ebuyer.com and www.overclockers.co.uk are about your best bet in terms of price and selection. Other sites such as www.scan.co.uk and www.dabs.co.uk may be cheaper in some areas but the first two are about your best choice in terms of price and availability.

    I have to lower my budget so i ve picked this...

    Cooler Master Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black £34
    Samsung SH-S222AB/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) £17
    Antec High Current Gamer 620W Power Supply £50
    Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache £38
    AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) £90
    ASRock M3A770DE AMD 770 (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard £53
    G.Skill RipJawsX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £40
    XFX ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £150
    Total=£472

    Does the ram go good with AMD? since it says its for sandy bridge?

    I also have 6 fans blue leds 120mm, is the psu good and reliable, and have the power i need for this system... ?
    Also, would you reckon i could play wow ultra? black ops? gw2? i could add £30 for a cooler so i have oc the cpu to like 3.6?

    i had to lower it by £100 on the budget because of repairs needed for my car.

    Changed psu to Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 650W V2 High Performance Power Supply £68

    /sigh back to the amd build I guess

    Yes the RAM will work fine, the PSU is more than good enough, WoW will run fine on Ultra (minus shadows) and Black Ops will also run fine.
    GW2 isn't out yet so nobody knows how it'll run, but it should be more than fine on that setup.

    And you don't need 6 fans, your case could get really loud unless they're good-quality fans. You just need 3-4 (1-2 intake, 1-2 exhaust).

    i don't understand the difference with the i5 and the amd one i picked?

    is that motherboard ok with that chip just so i know iam getting the parts correct.

    The i5 will trash the AMD chip you picked.

    why? i dont understand

    How is it hard to understand one thing is better than another thing. The one with more Mhz does not make it faster. The i5 can do MORE in one clock cycle than anything AMD currently sells.

    Difference between a Phenom II and a lower-end i5....isn't too huge actually. I noticed that Phenom x4's are going fairly cheap compared to Sandy Bridge chips. I suppose they're trying to get rid of them, which works out great for gamers on a super-tight budget

    The next generation of AMD chips will also somewhat work on AM3 socket I heard? Leaves you with room to upgrade I suppose :P

    I've seen a few benchmarks in the past(will need to go dig them up) where overclocking the i series had a bigger benefit than overclocking the Phenom II series.

    Can't say that sounds unnatural; usually the benefit will be better if the starting point is better off. >>;

    What I meant was the AMD would improve of course, but it would flatten out rather early in the OC process, where the intels just kept getting better.

    Respect the man's budget
    I'm all for recommending Sandy Bridge but from the looks of it it's just not going to fit in a £400 build.
    Phenom II x4 + HD5870 will run all his games fine on high/max settings and even in WoW raids at fair/good (minus shadows ofcourse).

    does that motherboard support SLI, i have got a EVGA GEFORCE GTX 260 896mb left around, and get a Asus GeForce GTX 560 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card for £150?

  14. #34
    You wouldn't be able to SLI those two together anyhow.

    1) No SLI support.
    2) SLI requires two of exactly the same card.
    3) You can't afford a GTX560. If you can, you're better off spending that money on a better CPU/mobo and sticking with the HD5870.
